Clive Staples Lewis was born in Belfast, Ireland, on November 29, 1898, into a cultured Protestant family with a strong academic background, his mother Florence Augusta Hamilton being the first female mathematics graduate of Queen’s College Belfast. The loss of his mother at age 10 marked a profound turning point, contributing to an early abandonment of his childhood faith and a lifelong exploration of grief and meaning.
