Led by Field Marshal Lennart Torstenson, the Swedish forces marched hundreds of miles from Bohemia to surprise King Christian IV of Denmark, capturing southern provinces before the Danes could effectively respond to the invasion.
Lennart Torstenson was a highly effective Swedish Field Marshal who played a pivotal role in the rise of the Swedish Empire. During the Thirty Years' War, he executed a daring strategic maneuver by opening a second front against Denmark-Norway. His leadership was characterized by rapid movement and tactical surprise, which allowed Sweden to overcome its 'strategic claustrophobia' and transition from a regional player into a dominant imperial power in Northern Europe.
Sweden attacked Denmark-Norway due to what historians describe as 'strategic claustrophobia.' In 1643, Sweden felt encircled by Danish-Norwegian territories, which included provinces like Scania, Halland, and Jämtland. Despite already being heavily involved in fighting the Holy Roman Empire, Swedish leadership decided to take the risk of a two-front war to break this encirclement and secure their dominance over the Baltic Sea and surrounding trade routes.
King Christian IV of Denmark was caught completely off guard by the Swedish invasion in December 1643. While he was in Copenhagen, he believed the ongoing European conflicts were distant problems until news arrived that Torstenson’s army had already crossed the border. The shock was total because the Swedish forces were supposed to be hundreds of miles away, yet they appeared suddenly to seize his southern provinces, leaving the Danish crown struggling to defend its territory.
