While he operated under Roman law by day, archaeological evidence suggests he served as a magician-priest or Druid ritualist by night. His home contained a hidden cellar used for secret ceremonies, providing a rare link between respectable Roman life and ancient Celtic spiritual practices.
In 2005, archaeologists in Chartres, France, uncovered a secret room hidden for two thousand years beneath the city center. Inside this cellar, they found four large incense burners arranged in a square, which still carried the scent of hallucinogenic herbs. One burner featured an inscription naming Gaius Verius Sedatus and included the abbreviation 'Dru,' offering a rare physical connection to the word Druid.
The discovery is significant because Druids famously relied on oral tradition and did not write down their own history, leaving behind very little physical evidence. This find in a Romanized town provides a direct archaeological link to the term 'Druid' through a written inscription. It reveals that Druidic practices continued in secret even within the heart of Roman-controlled urban areas rather than just in remote woods.
Based on the findings in the hidden cellar of Gaius Verius Sedatus, rituals involved the use of large incense burners and hallucinogenic herbs to create specific scents. The inscriptions suggest that the ritualist would attempt to contact a long list of spirits.
