    Swallowing OCD is a form of sensorimotor OCD where the brain hijacks an automatic process that typically happens hundreds of times a day without conscious thought. When you focus on a motor skill meant to be on autopilot, such as swallowing, you actually degrade its performance. By overthinking the mechanics—like the position of your tongue or the tension in your throat—you interfere with the body's natural ability to perform the task smoothly, leading to increased anxiety during social situations.

    Hyper-awareness can strike during high-stakes meetings or casual coffee dates, making you feel trapped by internal surveillance. You might worry about saliva pooling or whether others can see your throat muscles tensing, which pulls your focus away from the conversation. Understanding that this is a result of sensorimotor OCD rather than a physical ailment is the first step toward reclaiming your presence and moving away from exhausting internal monitoring.
