According to recent UWV data, the childcare sector is facing a staggering increase in vacancies. In mid-2020, there were approximately one thousand openings for pedagogical staff, but by the third quarter of 2021, that number tripled to three thousand. This rapid shift highlights a significant staffing crisis, as the demand for qualified workers has exploded while the number of active job seekers in the sector has simultaneously dropped by forty percent.
The labor market is currently classified as "very tight," which has severe consequences for BSO (out-of-school care) locations. In specific regions like the Randstad, including Middle Utrecht and the Gooi, the shortage of pedagogical staff is so acute that some centers have been forced to halt activities entirely. School leaders and childcare providers are finding it increasingly difficult to keep doors open as they compete for a dwindling pool of available workers.
With the traditional method of posting ads for fully qualified pedagogical workers proving ineffective, recruitment strategies must evolve. Experts suggest looking toward the "hidden" workforce to solve the childcare crisis. For school leaders building partnerships between education and childcare, thinking outside the box is essential. This involves moving away from conventional hiring practices and finding innovative ways to attract staff in a highly competitive and depleted labor market.
