Even though they feel like a threat, they are a common part of the recovery process, often leaving the person feeling a sense of guilt that feels authentic until they fully wake up.

    According to research and sleep science, these dreams are not usually a warning that a real-life relapse is imminent. While they are jarring, data shows that about one-third of adults who have resolved significant alcohol or drug problems report having these dreams. Instead of indicating failure, these dreams often result in a massive wave of relief once the individual realizes they are safe in bed and their sobriety remains intact, essentially acting as a way to experience consequences without real-world actions.

    Using dreams are a very common experience for those navigating alcohol recovery and drug recovery. A major study highlighted in the podcast indicates that approximately one-third of adults who have successfully addressed a significant substance use problem report experiencing these recovery nightmares. Despite being a physical and emotional event that can be quite scary, they are a shared phenomenon among many people who are otherwise doing very well in their journey toward long-term sobriety.
