Beringia was a massive land bridge that connected Siberia to Alaska during a period of low sea levels. According to established evidence, this stretch of land allowed human migrations from Eurasia into North America between 25,000 and 12,000 years ago. These early travelers were the founders of the Paleo-Indian or Lithic stage, representing a complex and adaptable history that predates European arrival by thousands of years.
The Clovis culture is a significant era in Native American History defined by archaeological evidence found in Clovis, New Mexico. By approximately 11,000 BCE, these early peoples had spread across the continent, leaving behind distinct fluted spear points. This period showcases the incredible adaptability of early populations as they transitioned through the Lithic stage and began diversifying into hundreds of culturally distinct nations across the North American landscape.
While many scholars and genetic data suggest three distinct waves of migration across the Beringia land bridge from Eurasia, Indigenous oral histories often provide a different perspective. Many of these traditional accounts tell a story of being created on the land since the beginning of time. This highlights the importance of recognizing both archaeological evidence and the deep, complex cultural narratives that define the legacy of resilience in Native American History.
