An average adult actually recycles their own body weight in ATP every single day. If you weigh seventy kilograms, your mitochondria are churning out seventy kilograms of this energy currency every twenty-four hours just to keep you functional.
How mitochondria works. ATP to ADP cycle. ROS. Why reactive species are bad.

Mitochondria are the heavy lifters of cell biology, often described as the power plants of the cell. They function like tiny furnaces or industrial plants within a vibrant cellular city, working constantly to keep the lights on and transport lines moving. Their primary role is to generate the energy necessary for every human action, from blinking your eyes to having a deep thought, effectively acting as a cellular power grid.
ATP, or adenosine triphosphate, is the specific type of molecular currency required for all cellular work. It is a mind-blowing fact that an average adult recycles their own body weight in ATP every single day. For example, if an individual weighs seventy kilograms, their mitochondria are churning out seventy kilograms of this energy currency every twenty-four hours just to keep the body functional and maintain the cellular power grid.
Reactive Oxygen Species, or ROS, are the natural byproducts of the energy production process within the mitochondria. Think of them as the exhaust or sparks that fly off the machinery in a large industrial plant. While they are a normal part of making cellular energy, they represent the less-than-perfect side of the process. If these sparks get out of control, they can impact the system, showing that energy production isn't always smooth sailing.
