Explore metacognition, the inner mirror of your mind. Learn how thinking about your thinking and using a metacognitive monitor can improve your learning strategies.

Metacognition is basically 'thinking about your own thinking.' It’s that inner mirror that helps us see not just what we’re learning, but how we’re learning it.
Meta cognition

Metacognition is defined as the process of thinking about your own thinking. It is often referred to as an inner mirror because it allows you to see not just the information you are learning, but the specific way you are learning it. By acting as a director of your own mental movie, you can observe your thoughts and become more intentional about your internal dialogue and cognitive processes.
A metacognitive monitor acts as an internal alert system that identifies gaps between your current actions and your actual goals. For example, if you realize your mind is wandering while reading, your monitor has kicked in to signal a lack of focus. Developing this skill allows you to assess, plan, and monitor your thoughts more effectively, leading to better performance and increased confidence when tackling complex information.
Research indicates that individuals who actively develop metacognitive skills perform better in various tasks and feel more confident in their abilities. Instead of simply throwing information at a wall and hoping it sticks, these skills empower learners to be more strategic. By using self-regulated learning techniques, you can move from being an actor following a script to a director who actively manages their own mental models and learning strategies.
