Electromotive Force, commonly known as EMF, is the prime mover in a direct current circuit. While the name suggests a force, it is actually a potential difference or the pressure provided by a battery that initiates the flow of electrons. Using a water analogy, the EMF source acts like a pump in a system of pipes, creating the necessary pressure to push the charge through the entire circuit.
Internal resistance represents the energy lost within a battery due to its own internal materials.
