El Tratado de Fontainebleau, firmado en 1807 entre la España de Carlos IV y la Francia de Napoleón, permitía inicialmente el paso de las tropas francesas por territorio español con el objetivo de invadir Portugal. Sin embargo, Napoleón aprovechó este acuerdo como una distracción para ocupar plazas estratégicas como Barcelona y Pamplona sin permiso oficial. Esta entrada masiva de soldados generó una gran tensión social y política que culminó en el Motín de Aranjuez y la posterior crisis de la monarquía española.
Las Abdicaciones de Bayona fueron una maniobra política ejecutada por Napoleón en mayo de 1808, tras atraer a la familia real española a territorio francés bajo el pretexto de mediar en sus disputas internas. Mediante presiones, el emperador obligó a Fernando VII a devolver la corona a su padre, Carlos IV, quien a su vez se vio forzado a ceder todos sus derechos dinásticos al propio Napoleón. Finalmente, el emperador entregó el trono de España a su hermano, José Bonaparte, lo que provocó un vacío de poder y el estallido de la resistencia popular.
Conocida popularmente como "la Pepa", la Constitución de 1812 fue un hito revolucionario redactado en una ciudad asediada por los franceses. Su importancia radica en que transformó a los súbditos en ciudadanos al establecer por primera vez la soberanía nacional, la división de poderes y la libertad de imprenta. Aunque tuvo un impacto práctico limitado durante la guerra y fue derogada por Fernando VII a su regreso en 1814, se convirtió en un símbolo mundial del liberalismo y sentó las bases del Estado moderno en España y América.
La invasión napoleónica y el cautiverio de Fernando VII crearon un vacío de poder que las colonias americanas aprovecharon para formar sus propias Juntas de Defensa, imitando el modelo peninsular. Aunque inicialmente estas juntas gobernaban en nombre del rey, la experiencia de autogobierno y el descontento previo de los criollos con el monopolio comercial español impulsaron el deseo de independencia total. La posterior negativa de Fernando VII a negociar y su insistencia en el absolutismo radicalizaron estas posturas, llevando a las campañas militares definitivas de líderes como Simón Bolívar y San Martín.
Las Guerras Carlistas fueron conflictos civiles que estallaron tras la muerte de Fernando VII en 1833 debido a una disputa sucesoria. El rey había promulgado la Pragmática Sanción para que su hija Isabel II pudiera reinar, anulando la Ley Sálica que favorecía a los varones. Esto enfrentó a los "isabelinos", apoyados por los liberales que buscaban reformas, contra los "carlistas", seguidores del hermano del rey, Carlos María Isidro, quienes defendían el absolutismo radical, la religión católica tradicional y los fueros regionales.
