La distinction repose sur l'intention derrière l'action humaine. La préservation consiste à gérer une ressource pour s'assurer qu'elle ne disparaisse pas afin de pouvoir l'exploiter sur le long terme, comme Colbert le faisait avec les forêts pour garantir la construction de navires de guerre. À l'inverse, la protection, apparue plus tardivement avec les parcs nationaux comme Yellowstone, vise à mettre la nature « sous cloche » pour elle-même, en interdisant l'activité humaine pour maintenir un état sauvage mythique.
L'environnement est un terrain de rapports de force entre les puissances mondiales car il touche à la souveraineté et au développement économique. Les tensions apparaissent notamment entre les pays développés, qui imposent des normes écologiques strictes (parfois qualifiées de protectionnisme vert), et les pays en développement qui revendiquent leur droit à l'industrialisation. De plus, les ressources naturelles comme l'or au Burkina Faso ou la gestion des « communs » comme la haute mer créent des conflits d'intérêts majeurs entre la croissance nationale, les profits des multinationales et les droits des populations locales.
L'Anthropocène désigne la période actuelle où l'activité humaine est devenue le principal moteur des changements planétaires. Avec la révolution industrielle, l'humanité est passée d'une gestion cyclique des ressources (comme le bois) à une extraction linéaire et intensive des énergies fossiles. Ce basculement a transformé la perception de la nature : elle n'est plus vue comme un partenaire qu'il faut ménager pour qu'il se régénère, mais comme un stock illimité de matériaux à consommer jusqu'à épuisement, menant aux crises climatiques contemporaines.
Le savoir est le « nerf de la guerre » car il permet de mesurer, de prouver et de contester les réalités écologiques. La maîtrise des technologies vertes, des données satellites ou des semences résistantes crée de nouvelles inégalités entre ceux qui possèdent les brevets et ceux qui subissent les impacts climatiques. La circulation de la connaissance est également un champ de bataille diplomatique, où des acteurs peuvent utiliser la science pour éclairer les décisions (comme le GIEC) ou, au contraire, financer le doute pour protéger des intérêts économiques.
La résilience est la capacité d'un système à encaisser un choc climatique tout en continuant de fonctionner. L'exemple de la pisciculture de La Canourgue montre que face à l'imprévisibilité des pluies et des températures, les acteurs doivent innover en s'alliant au vivant plutôt qu'en s'en déconnectant. Cela passe par la transition agro-écologique, comme l'aquaponie ou la lombrifiltration, qui transforment les déchets en ressources au sein d'un cycle fermé, réduisant ainsi la dépendance aux ressources extérieures et aux énergies fossiles.
