Écho était une nymphe réputée pour sa grande beauté et sa loquacité. Cependant, sa vie bascule suite à la jalousie d'une déesse qui décide de briser son existence en lui infligeant une malédiction. Elle perd alors l'usage de sa voix intime et se retrouve condamnée à ne plus jamais pouvoir initier une conversation. Elle reste dans l'ombre, suspendue aux lèvres des autres, capable uniquement de renvoyer les débris des phrases qu'elle entend, un phénomène acoustique devenu légendaire.
L'histoire d'Écho est le prologue indispensable à la chute de Narcisse, un homme dont le nom est aujourd'hui associé à un diagnostic médical. Narcisse, jeune homme trop fier, voit son destin tragiquement lié à celui de la nymphe qui ne peut que répéter ses paroles.
