Ever wonder why you can only see the Ballestas Islands by boat? Learn how Sernanp protects Humboldt penguins and sea lions in this marine reserve.

It’s a living, breathing sanctuary where the cold, nutrient-rich waters of the Humboldt Current create a massive bloom of life, allowing thousands of birds and sea lions to pack onto every available inch of rock.
To protect the delicate habitat and ensure the safety of the wildlife, visitors must view the islands from a boat. This regulation, managed by Sernanp, allows animals like Humboldt penguins and sea lions to carry on with their natural behaviors, such as nesting and breeding, without being stressed or disturbed by human presence.
The ideal time for a boat tour is between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM. During these morning hours, the sea is typically much calmer, which helps prevent motion sickness and provides better lighting for photography. In the afternoon, the "Paracas" winds—which can reach over 17 knots—often create sandstorms and rougher water conditions.
El Candelabro is a massive geoglyph over 180 meters long etched into a sandy hillside. It dates back to approximately 800 BC and is linked to the ancient Paracas culture. Because of its location and scale, the only way to truly grasp its size and see it clearly is from the water during a boat circuit.
The ecosystem is fueled by the Humboldt Current, which brings cold, nutrient-rich water to the surface. This process, known as upwelling, creates a massive bloom of plankton and fish. This abundance of food supports the incredible density of life found on the islands, including thousands of Guanay cormorants, Peruvian boobies, and large colonies of sea lions.
Sernanp uses a formula called "capacidad de carga," or capacity of care, to calculate the maximum number of daily visitors. This calculation accounts for physical space, the duration of tours, and "correction factors" like noise levels from boat motors and weather conditions like fog. For the Ballestas Islands, the effective capacity is set at approximately 330 visitors per day to prevent ecological degradation.
