Слово «фуга» в переводе с латыни буквально означает «бег» или «течение». Основная идея заключается в имитации: одна яркая музыкальная мысль, называемая темой, последовательно проходит через разные голоса. Слушателю кажется, что звуки догоняют друг друга или убегают, создавая сложную драматургию. Со временем фуга превратилась из простого канона в вершину полифонии, где одна тема представляется в различных контрапунктических условиях.
Классическая фуга строится на трех основных разделах: экспозиция (знакомство с темой), развивающая часть и реприза (финал). Внутри этой структуры выделяют пять ключевых элементов: тему (главный образ), ответ (повторение темы в другом голосе), противосложение (мелодия, звучащая одновременно с ответом), интермедию (связующий фрагмент между проведениями темы) и стретту (момент, когда голоса вступают с темой, не дожидаясь окончания предыдущего).
Ответ — это вступление второго голоса, который обычно звучит на пять ступеней выше или на четыре ниже основной темы. Если ответ повторяет тему абсолютно точно, его называют реальным. Однако если в теме есть резкие прыжки или она переходит в другую тональность, композитор слегка изменяет интервалы, чтобы переход звучал мягко и гармонично. В таком случае ответ называется тональным.
Стретта происходит от итальянского слова «сжимать» и представляет собой самый эффектный прием в фуге.
