Уильям Томас Бекфорд (1760–1844) был эксцентричным английским дворянином, путешественником и автором «Ватека» — основополагающего произведения готической литературы.

Повествование следует за нечестивым арабским халифом через сверхъестественные приключения, заканчивающиеся проклятием, смешивая экзотическую чувственность, оккультные размышления и грандиозные видения.
