What Morey discovered was that awareness of cognitive biases wasn't enough to overcome them. Even after explicitly warning his staff about anchoring bias, endowment effect, and confirmation bias, these mental errors persisted. Running a basketball team had become like taking apart a complicated clock only to discover an important part was inside his own mind.

The Kahnemans arrived in Jerusalem just as another conflict erupted. Following the UN's 1947 partition of Palestine, Jerusalem became divided between Arab and Jewish sectors. Despite the dangers, Danny found the experience liberating compared to Europe: "I hated the status of being a Jew in Europe. I didn't want to be hunted."

Despite societal pressure to pursue math and science, Amos chose humanities, studying with literary critic Baruch Kurzweil and writing poetry. After high school, he joined the paratroopers despite being too light to qualify-he drank water until he made weight. Amos never hesitated during jumps while others needed pushing, and he jumped over fifty times, including into battle during the 1956 Sinai campaign. His bravery earned him one of Israel's highest military honors after he rescued an unconscious soldier who had collapsed on an active explosive.
Amos rarely spoke of his military experiences except to tell amusing anecdotes. His conversational brilliance captivated everyone he met. Princeton philosopher Avishai Margalit observed that "the first thing Amos thought was in the top 10 percent" on any intellectual problem. Physicist Dick Nisbett designed a one-line intelligence test: "The sooner you figure out that Amos is smarter than you are, the smarter you are." His presence transformed rooms-as mathematician Varda Liberman described, "he would open his mouth and speak. And in no time he became the light that all the butterflies fly to."

At Hebrew University, Amos approached intellectual life strategically. After studying philosophy for two years, he declared it "a dry well" with "too many smart guys and too few problems left." He preferred psychology because it "pretended to be a science" with testable theories and hard data. Yet Amos himself downplayed his career choice: "The big choices we make are practically random... That I became a psychologist is probably not very revealing. What kind of psychologist I am may reflect deep traits."
Amos paid shockingly little attention to assigned work, yet excelled effortlessly. He never took notes in class, instead borrowing others' before tests and instantly mastering the material. When famous women's names appeared on a list with more men, students incorrectly judged there were more women on the list, and vice versa. The point wasn't that people were stupid-this mental shortcut (judging probability by what's easily retrieved from memory) often works well. But it systematically fails when memorable examples distort judgment.
They showed how this affects real-life situations. When judging divorce likelihood, people scan their memory for similar couples, making divorces seem more probable if divorces are prevalent among retrieved examples. Human judgment becomes distorted by the memorable. The implications extend to complex situations like international conflicts, where one's own perspective is more available than an opponent's view, limiting imagination and creating overly simplistic scenarios.

By summer 1972, Danny and Amos sought a broader audience beyond psychology journals. They wanted to apply their insights to "economic planning, technological forecasting, political decision making, medical diagnosis, and the evaluation of legal evidence." Their goal was to make experts aware of their biases and develop methods to counteract them-turning the real world into their laboratory.
Interest in their work was growing. When Amos visited the State University of New York at Buffalo that summer, he gave five different talks to packed rooms of academics. The most memorable was "Historical Interpretation: Judgment Under Uncertainty," where he showed historians how their field was subject to the same cognitive biases. "You need to be so careful when there is one simple diagnosis that instantly pops into your mind that beautifully explains everything all at once," he warned.
In 1977, at age seventeen, Redelmeier's favorite high school teacher gave him an article from Science titled "Judgment Under Uncertainty: Heuristics and Biases" by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky. What struck him wasn't simply that people made mistakes-it was that these errors were "predictable and systematic" and "ingrained in human nature."
After entering medical school, Redelmeier noticed disturbing patterns among his professors-self-importance, exaggerated confidence, and a resistance to acknowledging uncertainty. Medical authorities would make contradictory diagnoses based on their specialties, seeing only what they were trained to see. The problem wasn't just knowledge gaps but their need for certainty. The entire profession seemed arranged to confirm the wisdom of its decisions, attributing patient recoveries to treatments without solid evidence.
Years later, Redelmeier would collaborate with Amos Tversky on research examining how physicians treat individual patients differently than they approach groups with identical conditions. Their work showed doctors would order additional tests for individuals they wouldn't recommend in policy, and often failed to report conditions like seizure disorders to driving authorities despite agreeing they should.

They demonstrated this by presenting identical choices framed differently: when a sure thing was framed as a gain, people chose it over a gamble; when framed as a loss, they preferred the gamble. Their famous "Asian Disease Problem" further illustrated how framing affects risk attitudes-when options were presented in terms of lives saved, people chose certainty; when presented as deaths, they took risks.
Richard Thaler, a thirty-year-old assistant professor at Rochester with uncertain prospects, found himself drawn to the contradictions in economic theory. After discovering Kahneman and Tversky's work in 1976, he was electrified by their systematic approach to bias. Their "Value Theory" (later renamed "Prospect Theory") explained most of the irrational behaviors on Thaler's list in mathematical language economists could understand. "That really is the magic of the paper," said Thaler, "showing you could do it. Math with psychology in it."
