In the act of love, we temporarily play archetypal roles-the man as Sky-Father, the woman as Earth-Mother; he as Form, she as Matter. But we must give full value to the word "play." This is ritual masquerade, not literal truth. A woman taking this self-surrender literally would commit idolatry; a man claiming such sovereignty would commit blasphemy. The grandeur of Eros appears in its willingness to transcend happiness. When tested, lovers would rather share unhappiness with the beloved than be happy apart. This godlike quality both exalts and endangers Eros. Properly honored, it becomes a paradigm of how we should love God-"with this prodigality, not counting the cost." But obeyed unconditionally, it becomes demonic. The ultimate paradox of Eros is that this seemingly eternal love proves notoriously temporary. The passion that promises "forever" often fades within months or years. Eros makes promises he cannot keep without help. He needs divine grace to sustain what he glimpses-otherwise he dies or becomes a demon, chaining lovers in mutual torment. As Lewis observes, "It is not Eros's fault that he can't keep his promises. He is an infant god, his oath is the oath of a child."

Grace substitutes "a childlike, delighted acceptance of our Need," making us "jolly beggars" who receive true freedom and worth precisely because they're gifts. This transformation extends to how we receive love from others. We must learn to accept Charity-love that doesn't depend on our attractiveness-which is often harder than giving it. "We all need at times, some of us at most times, that Charity from others which, being Love Himself in them, loves the unlovable." The ultimate gift is what Lewis calls supernatural Appreciative love toward God-the ability to delight in Him for His own sake.
