Homeschooling parents are revolutionaries-brave risk-takers who dare to educate their children without formal training, defending their right to do so against institutional pressures. Yet this audacious choice often remains invisible to the children themselves. One mother discovered her daughter never wanted to homeschool because "you seemed so unhappy all the time." This raises a crucial question: What vision of adulthood are we modeling? Children know they'll eventually need to live independently and pay bills, but they also understand independence can mean delicious opportunities for adventure. As their primary role model for adulthood, what vision are you presenting? Do you make adult life look awesome or like a painful sacrifice filled with endless responsibility and little pleasure? Some teens resist growing up simply because the adulthood on display holds no magic-only weary responsibility. Feeling maxed out with homeschooling responsibilities is normal, but here's a little-known secret: parents who begin homeschooling for their children often continue for themselves. Home education frequently awakens an educational renaissance for adults in their thirties and forties. The perfect place to begin putting awesome into your adulting is by indulging your own academic appetite right in front of your kids. Growing up, Bogart's parents modeled an exciting adulthood-flying planes, writing books, playing tennis, throwing themed parties, attending cultural events, and pursuing creative hobbies. Their example made her eager to grow up. After their divorce shattered this vision, she committed to homeschooling as a service to her children. But she soon questioned whether motherhood and homeschooling should be a woman's only aspiration. She wanted her daughters to know they mattered for who they are, not just who they might raise. She began pursuing her own learning path alongside her children-building a writing career, exploring literature and film, and discovering that her personal growth actually enriched her children's education. You only get one life. If you choose to dedicate a sizable chunk of your adult years to homeschooling, it's important that you actually like it. No child wants to be the obligation that sucks joy from the person they love most. When homeschooling stops feeling like a privilege and opportunity, step back and ask yourself: Is the life you're leading living up to what you imagined? Are you doing things you thought adults would get to do?

The Brave Learner's Path Forward

Education is an atmosphere-not a house, program, or accredited teaching. What children learn at home connects directly to their experience of well-being in family life. You can own first-rate curriculum and transform your house into a fairyland-and still see homeschool fall to pieces because invisible forces shape how your family experiences living together, creating the core context for learning. Brave learning fundamentally depends on trust-trusting yourself, your children, and the learning process itself. True trust means accepting uncertainty about outcomes and allowing for course corrections. However, most parents begin homeschooling seeking guarantees and fail-safe strategies. This desire for certainty often leads to intensity, obsession, and controlling behaviors rather than the flexibility that genuine learning requires. For everyday parenting and education challenges, three simple tools can help you recover your footing: the Type B Checklist (focusing on connection rather than completion), the Surprise of Happy (staying alert for moments that surprise you into joy), and Paydays (celebrating when children achieve something wonderful). There's no way to fix every family or homeschool problem. Sometimes we excel; other times we fumble badly. A "good enough" home education means being conscious-making deliberate choices, acting with goodwill, staying open to growth. Your children will forgive mistakes if they know they'll be heard when naming them, if they feel your earnestness and see you trying. Homeschooling is ultimately a journey of courage-an audacious belief that you'll be enough for your children. Bogart's journey included six educational philosophies, co-ops, tutors, and countless shared experiences from Poetry Teatimes to international travel. She forgot to teach US government.
