This differs from the "additive" approach where we invite BIPOC people into white-controlled spaces without expanding our consciousness or developing skills for navigating race. Authentic relationships aren't casual acquaintances we use for diversity cover or people whose livelihoods we control. They're based on mutual interest, develop over time, and persist through conflict. We need supportive white people with strong anti-racist analysis rather than those who reinforce common dismissive narratives about racism. Having access to fellow white people who can help process challenges while holding us in "loving accountability" is invaluable-allowing us to admit racial patterns without risking abandonment while expecting alignment between professed values and actual practices. White affinity groups help keep racism on our radar and work on racist socialization. Meeting specifically as white people interrupts our tendency to see ourselves as unique individuals outside the forces of race. Effective groups are small, meet regularly, have strong facilitation, and can identify and interrupt white patterns. Accountability means demonstrating professed values through action that's answerable to BIPOC people. I don't call myself an ally because it's for racialized people to decide if I'm behaving as one in any given moment. Allyship is a verb, not a static state-sometimes I behave as an ally, other times I choose comfort and complicity. My accountability practices include donating income to BIPOC-led organizations, volunteering time and services while following their leadership, ensuring event accessibility with scholarships for BIPOC people, promoting BIPOC businesses and services, and always citing BIPOC people who inform my thinking. The journey from nice to anti-racist isn't about perfection-it's about persistent, humble effort to align our actions with our values. It requires moving beyond the comfort of niceness to the courage of confronting racism in ourselves and our communities, maintaining lifelong commitment to growth and learning, and developing authentic accountability to those most impacted by racism. Only then can we move from being "nice" to being truly anti-racist.
