While overtly racist regimes like Jim Crow, apartheid South Africa and Nazi Germany have fallen, racial hierarchy remains deeply embedded in society. What is blackness, and what about it provokes such deep-seated reactions-from adults abusing children in their care to lynchings triggered merely by thoughts of interracial relationships? Anti-black prejudice manifests globally, from beatings of African students in India to monkey chants at footballers in Eastern Europe to taxi drivers refusing service in South Korea. Yet blackness is defined differently across cultures. As someone "half white," Akala is treated entirely differently based on how his blackness is perceived in different societies: black in Britain and America, colored in South Africa, Carioca in Brazil, and "high colored" in the Caribbean. In northern Africa, he passes as a brown-skinned Amazigh local, avoiding the "Abeed" (slave) label given to darker-skinned people. Australia presents perhaps the most unusual boundary of blackness. There, Akala met people who would be perceived as white anywhere else yet fiercely identified as "blackfellas" (Aboriginal people).
