His political intuition led him to ally with princes and Imperial town magistrates-the only reliable political authorities of his time capable of protecting the Reformation. Ironically, the Reformation ultimately fostered tolerance and freedom of opinion-outcomes Luther never intended. Toleration prevailed not through ideology but through practical reality, as no confession could achieve total dominance. Economic necessity created interconfessional contact, gradually cracking the edifice of uniformity. Religious wars in the seventeenth century were only resolved through separation of religion and politics in peace treaties that echoed Luther's two kingdoms doctrine. Luther's teaching on justification transformed medieval works-based piety into evangelical grace-based devotion founded on "faith alone," setting a course toward a modern vocational ethic that determined Christian action in the world. The "holiness" once reserved for monastic life was now brought into the world, serving community, family, and state with a dynamic previously withheld by the clerical calling. As Dietrich Bonhoeffer recognized during humanity's profound suffering under tyranny, Luther's greatest impact came not as a German hero or church founder, but as a historic actor who shaped both public and private lives. Bonhoeffer wrote that Luther's return from the cloister to the world was Christianity's most consequential blow to worldly power since its earliest days. Following Jesus now meant living in the world-making Christian life no longer the domain of monastics but a duty for every believer, creating direct conflict between Christian living and worldly existence.
