Perversion is an inverted effect of fantasy where the subject determines himself as an object in his encounter with divided subjectivity. The Stalinist politician who loves mankind while carrying out purges adopts the position of being merely an instrument of Historical Necessity. The obscene enjoyment comes from feeling exculpated while inflicting pain-fulfilling the Other's Will without personal responsibility. When tasked with liquidating Jews, Heinrich Himmler struck the heroic pose that "Somebody has to do the dirty job." As Hannah Arendt observed in "Eichmann in Jerusalem," Nazi executioners performed a psychological sidestep to endure their horrible acts. Rather than saying "What horrible things I did to people," they would say "What horrible things I had to watch in pursuance of my duties." This perverse structure transformed their active role into passive witnessing of necessity, turning ethical effort into resisting the temptation of compassion. The same perverse logic operates in religious fundamentalism. Mohammad Bouyeri's letter to Hirshi Ali after murdering Theo van Gogh exemplifies this structure. Paradoxically, in the opposition between secular humanists and religious fundamentalists, humanists stand for belief while fundamentalists stand for knowledge. The true danger of fundamentalism isn't its threat to secular knowledge, but its threat to authentic belief itself.
