A Moral Revolution: The Sanctity of Human Life

Western moral standards have been decisively shaped by the Catholic Church's insistence on the sacredness of human life-a concept absent in the ancient world. This uniquely Catholic principle elevated the value of each person through their possession of an immortal soul, contrasting sharply with the contempt shown to the weak in pre-Christian societies. The Church abolished practices that devalued human life but were accepted in ancient societies. Catholics opposed infanticide, which had been normal practice even in Greece and Rome where Seneca wrote, "We drown children who at birth are weakly and abnormal." The Church's intervention reversed demographic imbalances-in ancient Rome, males outnumbered females by 30 percent due to female infanticide. Similarly, the Church condemned suicide, which Stoics had defended as noble. Augustine rejected this view, arguing that true greatness comes from enduring hardship rather than escaping it, while Aquinas declared life "a gift divinely given to man and subject to the power that gives life and takes it away." Catholic regions historically showed markedly lower suicide rates than Protestant areas. The Church's emphasis on human dignity led to the abolition of gladiatorial contests, which Carcopino called "butcheries of the arena stopped at the command of Christian emperors." Lecky recognized this as "scarcely any single reform so important in the moral history of mankind." Similarly, the Church consistently opposed dueling, with the Council of Trent effectively excommunicating duelists, and subsequent popes extending penalties to witnesses and accomplices. The Catholic Church developed Western just-war theory far beyond classical antecedents. While Cicero discussed just wars, the Church fathers expanded this into a comprehensive moral framework, motivated by "the biblical teaching concerning the sacredness of life." Augustine established that wars could only be justified by an aggressor's injustice, while implicitly protecting noncombatants. Aquinas codified three necessary conditions: proper authority, just cause, and rightful intention. The Church emerged during a time of profound sexual degradation in Roman society. Writers like Juvenal, Ovid, and Tacitus documented widespread promiscuity and perversion. The Church's teaching that intimacy belonged exclusively within marriage restored dignity to the institution, as even critic Edward Gibbon acknowledged. Importantly, the Church equalized adultery, making it a sin for both husbands and wives-a significant historical development credited to Christian influence. The Church teaches that truly human life requires divine grace to rise above our base nature-a view partially glimpsed even by pagans like Seneca. Catholic morality extends beyond external actions to internal disposition, following Christ's teaching that we must purify not just our bodies but our souls. We must avoid not only murder and adultery, but also hatred and impure thoughts that reduce others to objects.

A Civilization at the Crossroads

The Catholic Church has shaped Western thinking about God for two millennia, introducing four distinctive characteristics that differentiate the Western conception from ancient Near Eastern views: God is one, absolutely sovereign, transcendent, and good. While sharing these traits with Judaism, Catholicism adds the revolutionary concept of the Incarnation-that God seeks not just worship but friendship with humanity. This extraordinary religious idea has become so embedded in Western culture that even secular movements opposing Catholicism often unconsciously borrow Christian concepts. The Church didn't merely contribute to Western civilization but built it, transforming classical traditions and establishing foundations in monasticism, science, international law, economics, universities, charity, art, and morality. As the Church's influence has waned in modern times, we've witnessed corresponding cultural deterioration, particularly in art, where metaphysical emptiness has led to perverseness and sterility in modern artistic expressions. From Nietzsche's declaration of an "open sea" without inherent meaning to the chaos of modernist literature, atonal music, and degenerate architecture, the eclipse of Catholic influence has left a void of meaninglessness that continues to shape contemporary Western culture. Modernism in literature challenged traditional narrative structures, featuring chaotic plots like Kafka's The Metamorphosis where characters face incomprehensible realities. Music followed with Schoenberg's atonality and Stravinsky's chaotic rhythms, while architecture degenerated even in Catholic church buildings. By mid-twentieth century, existentialists like Sartre declared life utterly meaningless, advocating for facing the void and constructing one's own values. Art shifted from medieval humility, where artists served greater purposes without signing their work, to Romantic self-expression and eventually narcissistic nihilism exemplified by Duchamp's urinal displayed as art and Emin's unmade bed with vodka bottles and soiled items. Western Europe now faces demographic collapse, unable even to acknowledge its Christian heritage in the EU constitution. As Simone Weil observed, though not Catholic herself, abandoning Christianity means cultural degradation-a lesson the West is learning the hard way. The question remains whether our civilization can recover its foundations or continue drifting further from the Catholic roots that made its greatest achievements possible.
