Modern agriculture features vast monocultures, but farmers need to incorporate all four crop types: cool-season grasses, cool-season broadleaves, warm-season grasses, and warm-season broadleaves. Each influences the ecosystem differently. A healthy pasture contains all four types, so our rotations should too.
The fourth principle is maintaining living roots in soil as long as possible throughout the year. Brown laments how most farmers harvest crops and leave fields idle until the following year.
