Wilma added, "I can't say at this point I forgive this person," emphasizing "at this point" and acknowledging, "We have all done something dreadful in our lives, or have felt the urge to." Coming from the Mennonite tradition, the Derksens understood power's limitations. Wilma's family had fled persecution in Russia, where entire Mennonite villages were destroyed. "I was taught that there was an alternative way to deal with injustice," Derksen explained. For Mennonites, forgiveness is both religious imperative and practical strategy, recognizing the "profound limits to what the formal mechanisms of retribution can accomplish." When DNA evidence identified Mark Grant as Candace's killer twenty years later, forgiveness became infinitely harder. Wilma struggled with vengeful thoughts: "Why doesn't somebody just kill him?" But she ultimately chose a harder path that saved her family and sanity. "A man employs the full power of the state in his grief and ends up plunging his government into a fruitless and costly experiment. A woman who walks away from the promise of power finds the strength to forgive - and saves her friendship, her marriage, and her sanity. The world is turned upside down."

The Shepherd's Strength: Finding Courage in Vulnerability

Le Chambon-sur-Lignon, a remote mountain town in south-central France, had long been home to Protestant dissident groups, primarily Huguenots. When France fell to Germany in 1940, their pastor, Andre Trocme, preached resistance: "Loving, forgiving, and doing good to our adversaries is our duty. Yet we must do this without giving up, and without being cowardly." While most French citizens complied with the Nazi-aligned Vichy government's requirements, Trocme and his co-pastor Edouard Theis refused to install a flagpole, permit fascist salutes, sign loyalty oaths, or display Petain's portrait. When ordered to ring church bells for the Vichy regime's anniversary, their custodian Amelie refused: "The bell belongs to God." Jewish refugees began arriving at the Trocmes' door, first as a trickle then a flood. When Vichy minister Lamirand visited, the townspeople presented him a letter declaring: "We have Jews. You're not getting them." Why weren't the Nazis harsher with Le Chambon despite its open defiance? The deeper answer lies in the town's Huguenot history - they were descendants of French Protestants who had survived over a century of brutal persecution. "The people in our village knew already what persecutions were," explained Magda Trocme. Having endured massacres, imprisonment, and forced conversions, the Huguenots had developed sophisticated systems for hiding refugees, creating false papers, and smuggling people across borders. Andre Trocme was tall and solidly built with sharp blue eyes, described as "a violent man conquered by God." His pacifism never meant passivity - he and his wife Magda were known for their fierce arguments. When imprisoned with Theis and offered release if they pledged loyalty to Vichy, they refused. "We disagree with the marshal," Trocme declared. "He delivers Jews to Germans... we shall continue to disobey orders." This magnificent disagreeableness stemmed from personal tragedy. At ten, Trocme witnessed his mother's death in a car accident - "If I have been so solitary, if I have doubted everything... it is because you left me that June 24th upon that road." Later, his eldest son Jean-Pierre died by suicide, leaving Trocme feeling "like a decapitated pine." Yet he concluded: "They grow in thickness, perhaps, and that is what I am doing." The rescue of Jews in Le Chambon reveals how "the marginal and damaged" often possess extraordinary moral courage. As with David facing Goliath, "so much of what is beautiful and valuable in the world comes from the shepherd, who has more strength and purpose than we ever imagine." Through these remarkable stories - from David's strategic victory over Goliath to Andre Trocme's peaceful resistance against Nazi power - we discover a profound truth: our conventional understanding of strength and weakness, advantage and disadvantage, is often completely backward. What appears to be overwhelming power can mask critical vulnerabilities, while apparent disadvantages can become the source of unexpected strength. The giants of our world are not always what they seem, and the shepherds among us possess far more courage and capability than we ever imagined.
