Yet the statistics told a different story-60 percent of young Black men who drop out go to jail, a national disgrace that continues today. Unfit for schools and lacking street savvy, I saw no escape. The fearless kids who mastered the streets peaked at seventeen, discovering America had guns and cousins too. Their futures became visible in tired mothers on the 28 bus, in men harassing young girls. We could not get out-the ground trip-wired, air toxic, water stunting our growth. A year after witnessing a boy with a gun, my father beat me for letting another boy steal from me. Two years later, he beat me for threatening my teacher. Not being violent enough could cost my body. Being too violent could cost my body. Though I was intelligent and well-liked, I lived in powerful fear. What injustice marked a child for such fear? What hid behind the smoke screen of streets and schools? I couldn't retreat into church mysteries. My parents rejected all dogmas, spurned white-marketed holidays, wouldn't stand for their anthems or kneel before their God. The meek being battered in West Baltimore meant nothing to me. My understanding was physical-the moral arc bent toward chaos then concluded in a box.

Finding Salvation Through Knowledge

Fear ruled everything in my young life, connecting to the Dream broadcast nightly-the unworried boys, pie and pot roast, white fences and green lawns. But how did these things connect? Religion couldn't tell me. Schools couldn't tell me. The streets couldn't help me see beyond each day's scramble. I was curious by nature. My grandmother taught me to read at four and write as investigation. When I got in trouble, she made me write about it-not to curb my behavior but to interrogate myself. The lesson was profound: I wasn't innocent, my impulses weren't virtuous. And if true for me, it was true for others-affecting their stories, cities, and the country claimed as God-given. These questions burned in me. Research materials surrounded me in my grandfather's books-he worked at Howard University's Moorland-Spingarn Research Center. My father had been a Black Panther captain. I read his books and newspapers, attracted to their guns because they seemed honest, addressing this country in its primary language-violence. I compared the Panthers to the school heroes who seemed ridiculous by comparison. Every February we were herded into Civil Rights Movement assemblies, shown films of Black people seemingly loving the worst things-dogs tearing children, tear gas, fire hoses. Why were only our heroes nonviolent? I measured these freedom-lovers against what I knew-children with guns, parents with extension cords, the country that acquired land through murder and slavery. I saw streets and schools as arms of the same beast-one with official power, one with implicit sanction, both weaponizing fear and violence. Fail in schools, get suspended to streets. Fail in streets, lose your body. Those failing in schools justified their destruction in streets, allowing society to say, "He should have stayed in school." My salvation would come through knowledge. Malcolm X returned to the world through hip-hop during my adolescence. If I could have chosen a flag then, it would have shown Malcolm-controlled, intelligent, beyond fear. I bought his speeches at Everyone's Place on North Avenue. "Don't give up your life, preserve your life," he would say. This wasn't boasting but a declaration of equality rooted in the sanctity of the Black body. I loved Malcolm because he never lied, unlike schools, streets, and dreamers. He made things plain, his science rooted in the physical world. He spoke like a free man, like his body was his own. "If you're black, you were born in jail," Malcolm said-and I felt this truth in the blocks I avoided, times I couldn't walk home, my lack of control over my body.

The Mecca: Howard University's Sacred Ground

My only Mecca was, is, and shall always be Howard University. My family's history runs through it-my grandfather worked there, my uncles and aunts graduated from it, I met my son's mother there. Ponzi schemers, Christian cultists, mathematical geniuses-all together like a hundred different renditions of "Redemption Song." Students played saxophones where Donny Hathaway once sang, stepped in pink and green, jumped Double Dutch, formed ciphers of beatbox and rhyme, carried bell hooks in straw totes. They were Panamanian, Bajan, from places I'd never heard of-all hot and incredible, exotic even though we hailed from the same tribe. The Black world expanded before me as more than just a photonegative of white America. "White America" is a syndicate protecting its exclusive power to dominate our bodies-sometimes directly through lynching, sometimes insidiously through redlining. This power of domination is central to whiteness itself. We didn't choose our fences; Virginia planters imposed them with their one-drop rule. The result: a people embodying all physical varieties whose life stories mirror this range. Through The Mecca, I saw we were cosmopolitans within our segregated body politic. The Black diaspora wasn't just our world but, in many ways, the Western world itself.

Weaponized History and Shattered Myths

Against the erasure of Black history, I had Malcolm, my parents, and writers from The Source and Vibe creating new language to analyze our art and world. Out on the Yard, I witnessed the weight and beauty of our culture as demonstrable fact, and desperately wanted to communicate this evidence, sensing that the erasure of Black beauty connected to the destruction of Black bodies. I found promise in my father's books with their grand titles-Children of the Sun, Wonderful Ethiopians of the Ancient Kushite Empire. Here was not just our history but world history weaponized to noble ends-the Dream of a "Black race" with our own Tolstoys who authored operas, pioneered algebra, erected pyramids. Chancellor Williams's Destruction of Black Civilization became my Bible at Howard. His theory of multi-millennial European plunder gave me my Tolstoy. I read about Queen Nzinga resisting Portuguese colonizers, making a chair of her adviser when denied a seat. Such stories became weapons, supporting my theory that all Black people were kings in exile, severed from our original names and majestic Nubian culture. But my Howard history professors methodically disabused me of my weaponized history. They challenged me directly: Did Black skin convey nobility always? What about Blacks who practiced slavery? What did I even mean by "Black"? Was it a timeless category? Professor Linda Heywood hammered away at my romantic notions of Africa, telling Queen Nzinga's story without fantastic gloss. I realized my body wasn't closest to the queen's but to her adviser's-broken down into a chair for royalty. In European history, I saw Black people rendered through "white" eyes as regal and human in pre-enslavement art, contrasted with later Sambo caricatures. Perhaps being named "black" was just someone's name for being at the bottom-human turned object, object turned pariah. These realizations were physically painful. There was nothing holy in my skin; I was Black because of history and heritage. Black blood wasn't black; Black skin wasn't even black. My desire to live by others' standards wasn't escape but fear-fear that "they" were right, that we should accept their standards of civilization.

The Art of Learning and Living

At Howard's Moorland-Spingarn Research Center, where my grandfather worked, I discovered the library was my freedom-the pursuit of knowing, following curiosities through all manner of books. The classroom was a jail of others' interests; the library was open, unending, free. I found these truths in other poets' works about small hard things-aunts and uncles, smoke breaks after sex, girls drinking from mason jars-that reflected the spectrum on the Yard better than my alliterative talk of revolution or African antiquity. After readings, poets would argue about everything on U Street, reinforcing the discordant tradition I'd found in Moorland. I began to see discord, argument, chaos, even fear as power. The gnawing discomfort wasn't an alarm but a beacon. My education's point was discomfort-the process that would break all comforting myths and leave me only with humanity in its terribleness. I learned that being Black didn't immunize us from history's logic or the Dream's lure. Even Prince George's County-"PG County"-with its wealthy Black enclave and Black-elected politicians, maintained a police force as vicious as any in America. To be Black and beautiful wasn't grounds for gloating. A writer must be wary of every Dream and every nation, especially his own. I fell in love at The Mecca one last time, lost my balance under the spell of a girl from Chicago-my son's mother. I see us with friends in her living room, me with a blunt in one hand, beer in the other. When our fingers brushed as I passed her the blunt, I shuddered. She brought it to her plum-painted lips, pulled, exhaled, then pulled the smoke back in. A week earlier I had kissed her, and watching this display, I wondered what it must be to embrace her, to be exhaled by her.

The Birth of My Son and the Weight of Legacy

Nothing between us was planned-not even you, my son. At twenty-four when you were born, we ranked as teenage parents among our class. We were often asked if we planned to marry, presented as a shield against others or monotony. But we knew too many who'd married and abandoned each other. The truth was you were our ring. We'd summoned you, and you deserved all protection. Everything else was subordinate. I owe you everything I have. Before you, I had questions but nothing beyond my own skin in the game. But I was grounded by the fact that should I go down, I would not go down alone. You were born that August. I thought of The Mecca's great spectrum-Black people from everywhere, with every background, speaking different languages, playing Mongo Santamaria, studying mathematics, unearthing mysteries of the enslaved. I wanted you to have it all, to claim the whole world. I wanted "Tolstoy is the Tolstoy of the Zulus" to be obvious to you. Yet even in this cosmopolitan wish, I felt ancestry's power, compelled toward knowledge my ancestors made. The Struggle is in your name, Samori-named for Samori Toure who fought French colonizers for the right to his Black body. He died captive, but the profits of that struggle are ours. I learned this living among people I wouldn't have chosen, because being Black's privileges aren't self-evident. We're the "faces at the bottom of the well," but there's wisdom down here. I think of the old rule that when a boy is attacked in someone else's hood, his friends must stand with him, taking their beating together. Within this edict lay the key to living. None were promised to end the fight standing with fists raised. We couldn't control our enemies' number or weapons. Sometimes you caught a bad one. But whether fighting or running, you did it together. What we must never do is willingly surrender our bodies or our friends'. That was the wisdom: We didn't control the street's direction, but we could fashion our walk. That's your name's deeper meaning-that struggle itself has meaning.

The Weight of Black Bodies in America

You must be responsible for your Black body in ways other boys cannot know. You'll be held accountable not just for your actions but for the worst actions of all Black bodies, while simultaneously bearing responsibility for the bodies of the powerful. A policeman who strikes you will justify it through your "furtive movements." The women around you carry burdens you'll never comprehend. Make peace with chaos, but never lie about what they took from us, how they transformed our bodies into commodities. Shortly before your birth, PG County police pulled me over-the same force poets had warned me about, known for killing Elmer Clay Newman, shooting Gary Hopkins, and beating Freddie McCollum half-blind. They shot with alarming regularity, investigated themselves, and returned to the streets emboldened. I survived that encounter, but later read that they'd killed again-this time Prince Jones, a Howard student I knew with his lean face and easy smile. Prince had been driving to his fiancee's home when a plainclothes officer shot him repeatedly, not in PG County or DC, but Virginia. The officer claimed Prince tried to run him over. I knew prosecutors would believe him. At Prince's funeral at Rankin Chapel, people spoke of his religious devotion, and some asked forgiveness for the officer. I couldn't share this sentiment-Prince wasn't killed by one officer but by his country and all its fears. The officer, a known liar previously demoted for false evidence, had been tracking someone with a completely different build. He confronted Prince with gun drawn but no badge. Despite this, he faced no charges, no punishment, and returned to work. Prince Jones represented all my fears-if he, the "twice as good" Christian scion of a striving class, could be destroyed, who could escape? Think of all invested in him-the Montessori tuitions, music lessons, sports activities, birthday parties, family photos, vacations, all the love and knowledge of a Black family poured into that vessel, now shattered on concrete. His daughter joined the ranks of those abandoned by fathers, continuing a generational pattern.

The Dream and Its Devastating Cost

When you were almost five, we saw "Howl's Moving Castle" on the Upper West Side. Afterward, a white woman pushed you on the escalator saying, "Come on!" Multiple reactions flooded me-parental protection, insecurity about my ability to protect your Black body, and the sense she was pulling rank. She wouldn't have pushed a Black child in my part of Flatbush out of fear of consequences. I spoke hotly, she shrank back, and a white man defended her rather than you. He threatened, "I could have you arrested!"-which means "I could take your body." I came home shaken by shame and rage. I've never been violent, never felt pride in righteous self-defense. My greatest regret was that in seeking to defend you, I endangered you. One must be without error out here-walk in single file, work quietly, make no mistakes. But you are human and will make mistakes. You'll misjudge, yell, drink too much. The price of error is higher for you than your countrymen. America justifies a Black body's destruction by beginning with their error, real or imagined-with Garner's anger, Martin's mythical words, Bell's wrong crowd. White people obsess over personal exoneration. To them, "racist" conjures tobacco-spitting oafs or mythical monsters. Nixon said of segregationist Strom Thurmond, "Strom is no racist." During mass lynchings, executioners remained "persons unknown." In 1957, Levittown residents argued for segregation as "moral, religious and law-abiding citizens" who were "unprejudiced." As Solzhenitsyn wrote, evildoers must believe what they're doing is good or natural law. This is the Dream's foundation-believing their possession of it comes from grit and honor, with only passing acknowledgment of bad old days that supposedly have no ongoing effect. At the Civil War's onset, our stolen bodies were worth four billion dollars-more than all American industry, railroads, workshops, and factories combined. Cotton, rendered by our bodies, was America's primary export. The richest Americans lived in the Mississippi Valley, wealthy from our stolen bodies. Early presidents held our bodies in bondage; our bodies built the Capitol and National Mall. Mississippi declared upon leaving the Union: "Our position is thoroughly identified with the institution of slavery, the greatest material interest of the world."

Beyond the Dream: Finding Humanity

I speak to you as the serious man I've always wanted you to be-one who doesn't apologize for his feelings or constrict himself for others' comfort. Growing into consciousness, I want you to attack every day in struggle rather than measuring yourself against those who believe themselves white. Be a conscious citizen of this terrible, beautiful world. In Chicago, I witnessed a Black family's eviction-the humiliated husband ranting with the exaggerated gestures of the powerless while officers stood by. Throughout that city, I met elderly Black survivors who'd built honorable lives despite systemic plunder. Yet behind each success were millions gone-victims of planned ghettos, federal policies, and killing fields as deliberately constructed as any suburb. "Black-on-black crime" is manipulative jargon erasing those who engineered the covenants, fixed loans, and built projects. The plunder of Black life is America's heirloom, its default setting. The Dream that murdered Prince Jones murders Chicago's Black residents with the same premise-the reduction of the Black body. Don't accept this lie. I resolved to hide nothing from you. Remember when I took you, at thirteen, to meet the mother of a murdered Black boy? He'd been killed for refusing to turn down his music. Though composed in her grief, she wondered if her teachings had been enough. She told you directly: "You exist. You matter. You have value. You have every right to be you." I've tried saying the same, though with less clarity because I'm afraid, having no God to hold me up. Disembodiment is terrorism-the dragon that pushed boys into theater of ownership, middle-class Blacks into aggressive passivity, and me into being "twice as good." We knew these murders served someone else's ends.

Finding Freedom Beyond America's Borders

Paris overwhelmed me with its freedom-streets thronged with people in amazing configurations, without the ever-present fear I knew from home. People wore no armor I recognized. I melted into the city like butter in stew, sharply creased and pointed east. At dinner, I flailed with catastrophic French. We had wine, steak, bone marrow, liver. The waitress cut off my compliments: "The best you've ever had, right?" The next day I walked through the Musee Rodin, stopped at a bistro, visited Le Jardin du Luxembourg. There, a strange loneliness took hold-I hadn't spoken English all day, had never sat in a public garden before. I was truly in someone else's country yet outside it. In America I was part of an equation-the one stopped by police, the father of a Black boy. Here I was an alien, landless and disconnected, feeling the weight of my generational chains, my body confined by history to certain zones. I wanted you to have your own life apart from fear-even apart from me. I am wounded, marked by old codes that shielded me in one world and chained me in the next. Your grandmother once warned me you would "test me," and I shamefully thought the same. We are entering our last years together, and I wish I had been softer. Your mother had to teach me how to love you-how to kiss you goodnight, tell you I love you. It still feels like ritual because I am wounded, tied to old ways learned in a hard house. Yet being distanced from fear isn't a passport out of struggle. We will always be Black, even if it means different things in different places. France has its own dream built on its own collection of bodies. Remember the Roma begging in streets, the Algerian cab driver speaking of unity under Africa, the rumbling beneath Paris's beauty. It was good to have your uncle Ben and aunt Janai there-people who'd learned to travel in adulthood, who understood the balance between awe at what these people built and awareness of whom they built it upon.

I visit Prince Jones's mother, Dr. Mable Jones, at her affluent home outside Philadelphia. She greets me with composure despite her grief, a dignified woman somewhere between forty and seventy. Her Christmas tree still displays stockings bearing her children's names, including her murdered son's. She tells me about growing up poor in Louisiana, discovering racial distance at age four when her mother moved her to the back of a Greyhound bus. Despite facing segregation, she made a childhood pact to become a doctor and fulfilled it-integrating her high school, excelling academically, and eventually becoming chief of radiology. Dr. Jones speaks of all she acquired through unceasing labor, rising from grinding poverty. She gave her children luxury-annual ski trips to Europe, taking her daughter to England to study Shakespeare, a car when she turned sixteen. Though Prince never took to material things (preferring reading and travel), she bought him a jeep with a huge purple bow for his twenty-third birthday. He simply said, "Thank you, Mom." Without pause she adds, "And that was the jeep he was killed in." After leaving Dr. Jones, I sit idle in my car, contemplating all she invested in Prince and all that was lost. The Mecca couldn't save him, just as we ultimately cannot save ourselves. Those old photographs from the 1960s of Black people facing clubs and dogs weren't shameful-they were true. We are captured by America's majoritarian bandits, and cannot escape alone. Perhaps the hope of the movement is to awaken the Dreamers to what their need to be white has done to the world. But we cannot arrange our lives around this small chance of their awakening. Our moment is too brief, our bodies too precious. I remember our trip to Howard's Homecoming-sitting in bleachers with old friends, watching alumni cheerleaders in their old colors and uniforms, a woman dancing as though twenty years had barely passed. The tailgate party revealed the entire diaspora-hustlers, lawyers, Kappas, doctors, Deltas, geeks. I felt myself disappearing into their bodies, the birthmark of damnation fading. This was a moment beyond the Dream, imbued with Black power-the dungeon-side view of Monticello. We have made something here, flipped the one-drop rules. They made us into a race; we made ourselves into a people. This was the love that drew Prince Jones. Not divinity, but knowledge of how fragile everything is-especially the Dream. I left The Mecca knowing that if Dreamers reap what they've sown, we would reap it with them. Plunder has become habit and addiction. The Dream's parameters were once limited by technology, but now the Dreamers plunder not just human bodies but the Earth itself. Something more fierce than Marcus Garvey rides the whirlwind, rising with the seas. The cotton through our chained hands inaugurated this age; the automobile is the noose around Earth's neck. I don't believe we can stop them-they must stop themselves. Still I urge you to struggle, Samori-for memory, wisdom, warmth. But not for the Dreamers' conversion. They must learn to struggle themselves, to understand their Dream is our collective deathbed.
