Despite this complexity, these aspects essentially reflect a dualistic view of human nature-one spiritual aspect that is potentially eternal and can ascend to the stars (particularly Orion), and another that remains earthbound with the corpse. Native North American peoples held remarkably similar soul concepts. Across diverse tribes, anthropologist Ake Hultkrantz identified "soul dualism" as the predominant belief system throughout North America. This typically manifested as a "free-soul" (representing the person's consciousness that could travel independently) and a "body-soul" (the life force animating the physical form). Both ancient Egyptians and Native Americans believed souls journeyed westward after death. In both traditions, souls could temporarily leave the body during dreams or comas, with death only confirmed when the free-soul failed to return. For both cultures, the journey began with proper mortuary rites, followed by travel westward toward the setting sun. At this western edge, souls gathered at a transitional place, awaiting the right moment after nightfall to continue their celestial journey. In ancient Egypt, Orion represented Osiris, Lord of the Dead. The soul's journey required passing through a celestial portal associated with Orion, with funerary texts repeatedly urging souls to "reach the sky as Orion" and "go upon the ladder with my foot on Orion." In Native American cosmology, the same constellation was seen as a "Hand" (with Orion's belt forming the wrist), containing a portal in its palm. The Orion Nebula, depicted in Mississippian iconography as the "eye" in the "hand-and-eye" motif, was actually a "hole in the sky" through which the free-soul must leap to access the afterlife.

The Great Cataclysm: Evidence of Cosmic Impact

In May 2017, Graham Hancock visits the Murray Springs Clovis site in Arizona with geophysicist Allen West. This rich archaeological site yielded the remains of "Eloise," a mammoth butchered by Clovis hunters 12,800 years ago. The site was excavated in the 1960s by Vance Haynes, who identified a distinctive "black mat" soil layer that covered the Clovis remains and extinct megafauna. This layer marks "a major climate change from the warm dry climate of the terminal Allerd to the glacially cold Younger Dryas." Allen West explains that evidence from the Greenland ice cores shows the Younger Dryas impact wasn't a single event but a 21-year period of cosmic bombardment between 12,836 and 12,815 years ago. This catastrophe likely involved fragments from a massive 100-kilometer diameter comet that had entered Earth's orbit around 30,000 years ago before undergoing fragmentation about 20,000 years ago. The resulting debris formed the Taurid meteor stream-a tubular formation 30 million kilometers in diameter that Earth still passes through twice yearly. In 2015, researchers working on the Younger Dryas Impact Hypothesis formally established the Comet Research Group (CRG), now comprising 63 scientists from 55 universities across 16 countries. The evidence from their studies is compelling: all eleven archaeological sites across North America showed significant platinum peaks averaging 12 times higher than normal crustal abundance and 3-66 times higher than levels found in Greenland, further confirming North America as the cataclysm's epicenter. A 2018 Journal of Geology study led by Wendy Wolbach revealed that approximately 9% of Earth's total terrestrial biomass-covering 10 million square kilometers, an area twice the size of the Amazon rainforest-burned in extraordinary wildfires at the Younger Dryas onset. In California, human activity ceased entirely between 12,800 and 12,200 years ago.

Since beginning work on Fingerprints of the Gods in the early 1990s, I've advocated for an advanced Ice Age civilization destroyed in the cataclysms ending that epoch. The parallels between Mississippian and ancient Egyptian afterlife concepts are too detailed to be coincidental, pointing not to direct influence but to inheritance from a common source. I've consistently maintained that this lost civilization was erased around 12,500 years ago-remarkably close to the now scientifically established date of 12,800 years ago for the comet impacts that triggered the Younger Dryas. North America has been wrongly seen as an uninhabited archaeological vacuum awaiting the arrival of culture from elsewhere. With evidence of human presence in the Americas 130,000 years ago-more than twice as long as humans have been in Europe-there was ample time for civilization to develop before the Younger Dryas cataclysm. The Americas offered unique conditions: a vast landmass cut off from the rest of the world by oceans and ice sheets, creating a paradise of abundant resources where the earliest Americans could follow a different evolutionary path from other human societies. If the Younger Dryas cataclysm erased a prehistoric civilization, what might it have been like? Based on descendant cultures, it likely had profound spiritual explorations of death, sophisticated maritime technology (evidenced by ancient maps showing Ice Age geography), and mastery of geometry and astronomy. I propose not nuclear power or mechanical advantage, but consciousness-based technologies. The inexplicable architectural achievements at sites like Egypt's Great Pyramid, Baalbek's Trilithon, and Sacsayhuaman in Peru suggest technologies beyond our understanding. I propose that the lost Ice Age civilization mastered psi powers like telepathy, telekinesis, remote viewing, and healing-abilities still associated with master shamans. This Native American civilization likely developed between the Cerutti mastodon scavenging 130,000 years ago and the Younger Dryas cataclysm 12,800 years ago. Their sciences would have emerged from shamanic practices rather than mechanical advantage. Our modern society marginalizes death, treating it as something to avoid thinking about and postpone indefinitely. Yet ancient traditions warn that unwillingness to die produces unfavorable results. The Tibetan "Science of Death" offers profound insights into the afterlife journey. In the Bardo (afterlife realm), the soul possesses heightened intelligence, extraordinary concentration, clairvoyance, teleportation, and the ability to be transformed by thought alone. This lost civilization, with its shamanic origins, focused not on material wealth but on soul perfection through vision quests and right living. It likely explored parallel dimensions to prepare initiates for death's journey-a quest interrupted by the Younger Dryas comet impact 12,800 years ago. Survivors attempted to preserve these teachings among hunter-gatherer cultures, planting "sleeper cells" of knowledge that could later reactivate. Thousands of myths across every continent speak of an advanced prehistoric civilization destroyed by cataclysm. Many suggest humans brought this disaster upon themselves through arrogance, cruelty, and disrespect for the earth. An Ojibwa tradition speaks directly to this, describing a comet that "burned up the earth" in ancient times because "things were wrong with nature" and "people had abandoned the spiritual path." The tradition warns this comet will return-both as destruction and restoration. The concept for America Before crystallized during my December 2016 visit to the Standing Rock Sioux protest camp against the Dakota Access Pipeline. The Standing Rock protest embodied a crucial message: we urgently need to change our relationship with Earth and heed ancient wisdom preserved by First Americans. Without restoring this balance, "we're not going to have anywhere to live in the next hundred years." Some 12,800 years ago, this balance was catastrophically disrupted, erasing a key chapter of human history. If our own chapter is similarly lost, will future myths tell how through greed, conceit, recklessness, hatred and lack of love, we conspired in our own downfall?
