Michel Foucault was born in Poitiers, France, on October 15, 1926, into a family of physicians, a background that gave him early proximity to the institutional worlds of medicine and authority that he would later scrutinize so closely. He studied at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, where he received rigorous training in philosophy and also pursued psychology and psychopathology.
