Darren Hardy’s career in personal development grew out of a nontraditional start. Raised largely by his father after his parents divorced when he was 18 months old, he has said that the defining lesson of his childhood was a demanding standard his father repeated: “Be the Exception.” He did not follow a long academic route; published accounts of his background say he completed one semester of college before turning fully to business. By 18 he had launched his first company, and by his own telling he was earning a six-figure income before age 19, an early success that anchored the self-reliance and goal discipline that would later define his writing.
