Chade-Meng Tan is a former Google engineer and author focused on mindfulness, emotional intelligence, and leadership. He helped create Google’s Search Inside Yourself program and wrote Search Inside Yourself and Joy on Demand. Best known for bringing meditation into the workplace, his work helped popularize mindfulness in corporate settings.
Chade-Meng Tan, widely known as Meng, grew up in Singapore and was educated there before continuing to the United States for a master’s degree in computer science at the University of California, Santa Barbara. After early engineering work at Kent Ridge Digital Laboratories in Singapore, he joined Google in June 2000 as one of the company’s earliest engineers. He spent years building products and working on search quality before making an unusual move from engineering into people development. That shift, later embodied in his comic but memorable title “Jolly Good Fellow,” became the key turning point in his career: he began translating contemplative practice into a practical language for work, leadership, and organizational life.
