History of Darchula to Tibet trade route. Tribes and their customs. Rung community. Customs, people and some stories.

The Rung, also known as the Rang, are a Tibeto-Burman ethnic group residing in the high-altitude regions where Nepal, India, and Tibet meet. They primarily call the upper reaches of the Mahakali, Darma, and Johar valleys their home. Living in a landscape defined by 20,000-foot mountain passes, the Rung have developed a unique civilization that thrives in some of the most forbidding terrain on the planet, acting as a vital bridge between different mountain cultures.
The Rung are recognized as masters of the trans-Himalayan trade routes, serving as a gateway between civilizations for generations. Historically, they have managed the movement of essential and precious goods, including salt, wool, and medicinal herbs, across difficult mountain folds. This role as high-altitude specialists has allowed them to maintain a thriving community by connecting the economies and cultures of the northwestern corner of Nepal with those of Tibet and India.
While the community identifies strongly as Rung, they are often referred to by outsiders as the Shauka or Bhotiya. These alternative terms, such as Shauka or Bhotiya, sometimes carry specific regional or administrative baggage depending on the context. Despite these external labels, the Rung maintain a distinct cultural identity rooted in their history as high-altitude specialists and traders living within the rugged mountain folds of the Mahakali and surrounding Himalayan valleys.
