Explore the origin of Satan in the Hebrew Bible. Learn how the figure evolved from 'ha-satan,' a loyal heavenly agent and accuser, into a modern archvillain.

The figure we call 'Satan' actually started out as one of God's most loyal employees—a sort of heavenly secret agent or prosecuting attorney whose job was to test human piety.
The origin of Satan

In the earliest biblical texts, the figure we now call Satan was not an archvillain but a loyal member of the celestial inner circle known as the 'sons of God.' Rather than being a rebel in a pit of fire, he functioned as a heavenly secret agent or prosecuting attorney. This figure served the divine throne by testing human loyalty and reporting back to God, acting more like a royal official than a demonic enemy.
In the Old Testament, the word 'satan' is not used as a proper name but as a title: 'ha-satan.' This translates to 'the accuser' or 'the adversary.' This role was similar to the 'eyes and ears of the king' found in ancient Persian empires. His primary job was to travel and sniff out disloyalty or rebellion among humans, serving as a quality control officer for the divine court.
The adversary functioned as a member of God's payroll, sitting at the conference table with other angels rather than leading a coup against heaven. His purpose was to test whether humans were truly committed to their faith or simply acting out of convenience. By acting as a 'prosecuting attorney,' he ensured that those who claimed to be loyal were actually sincere in their hearts, serving as a necessary part of the heavenly administration.
