They built a monastery on a jagged rock 11 kilometers off the coast, carving over 600 stone steps to reach the summit. They lived in waterproof, beehive-shaped stone huts called "clochans" and survived on a diet of fish, seabird meat, and rainwater.
Brian Boru was a powerful warrior-king who rose from a small clan to become the "Emperor of the Irish," successfully unifying the island's warring factions. The Battle of Clontarf in 1014 was a massive conflict where his forces defeated a coalition of rebellious Irish kings and Viking reinforcements. Although Brian was killed in his tent at the end of the battle, the victory effectively ended large-scale Viking political ambitions in Ireland and turned Brian Boru into a national symbol of unity.
