Il a conclu un pacte stratégique avec Diarmait Mac Murchada : en échange de son aide militaire pour reconquérir le Leinster, Strongbow recevait la main de la fille de Diarmait, Aoífe, en mariage et devenait l'héritier officiel du royaume. Il a débarqué avec 4 000 hommes pour affirmer sa souveraineté, devenant le premier roi d'Angleterre à fouler le sol irlandais. Il a utilisé la religion comme justification, s'appuyant sur une bulle papale l'autorisant à "réformer" l'Église irlandaise, et a forcé les chefs locaux et les seigneurs normands à lui prêter allégeance, transformant une expédition de mercenaires en une colonisation d'État.
