Discover how James O. Fraser, known as Elder Brother Number Three, brought faith to the Lisu people in the Nujiang Grand Canyon through years of perseverance.

Solid, lasting missionary work is done on our knees, but we must also realize that the longer the preparation, the deeper the root.
A comprehensive autobiographical study of James O. Fraser, the missionary to the Lisu people in China. Cover his methods, the challenges and successes of his ministry, and specifically how he maintained his faith and trust in God throughout the process.

James Outram Fraser was a British engineer who abandoned a prestigious career to serve as a missionary in the remote Nujiang Grand Canyon. Known to the local Lisu people as "Elder Brother Number Three," he lived in humble conditions, such as bamboo huts, to share his faith. His dedication over a century ago became the catalyst for one of the most successful missionary efforts in modern history, transforming the cultural and spiritual landscape of the region.
Fraser's influence led to a massive cultural shift among the Lisu people in the mountains near Myanmar and Tibet. Today, roughly 80% to 90% of the 900,000 Lisu people identify as Christian. A unique result of this history is the prevalence of four-part choral harmonies in remote villages. These hymns, which sound like European cathedral music, have become a staple of Lisu village life alongside their traditional folk songs.
James O. Fraser’s story is a study in maintaining spiritual conviction and mental health during periods of absolute silence and failure. Before seeing widespread success, he spent years pouring his heart into his work with no visible results. He lived a difficult life in the wilderness, eating salty vegetables and residing in simple huts, while struggling with the personal toll of his isolation in the mist-covered mountains of southwest China.
