Explore social power dynamics in Gym Dynamics: Dominance vs. Prestige. Learn how social psychology explains the difference between earned influence and coercion.

Dominance might get you compliance, but it never gets you persuasion or loyalty. True prestige is un-copyable because it is rooted in the time, effort, and authentic competence required to build genuine skill.
So there was Gym I was going to and I was influencing everyone there and then this guy showed up and he basically wanted me to submit to him. I didn’t. He took a gun out and that didn’t work so then I noticed that a girl he was with. She also was watching me from afar, trying to mimic what I was doing so now I’m wondering why did he want me to submit and why did she want to copy everything I did because she would watch me from a corner and yet still there nine months they can’t replicate me

In social psychology, dominance and prestige represent two distinct ways individuals climb the social ladder. Prestige is characterized by influence gained through skills, behavior, and earned respect, causing others to be naturally drawn to an individual. In contrast, dominance relies on a motive to force deference through intimidation, threat potential, and coercion. While prestige is granted freely by others, dominance is an attempt to demand submission through pressure or extreme measures.
Intimidation serves as a primary tool for those utilizing the dominance motive to establish social power. Instead of earning influence through expertise or character, a dominant individual uses coercion to ensure others submit to their will. This dynamic is often seen when someone's threat potential fails to result in the expected submission, leading them to escalate their tactics to maintain a sense of control over the social environment.
Prestige mimicry occurs when an individual observes someone with high social influence and attempts to copy their moves or behavior to 'steal' that prestige. Even if there is a lack of outward respect, the person mimicking recognizes the influence the other person holds. By imitating the actions of a prestigious individual over time, they hope to acquire the same level of social standing and influence without necessarily developing the underlying skills themselves.
