By 2050, nutrient collapse could put 150 million people at risk of protein deficiency, 138 million at risk of zinc deficiency, and 1.4 billion facing iron deficiency.

The coming inundation will claim countless cultural landmarks and entire nations: beaches worldwide; Facebook's headquarters; the Kennedy Space Center; America's largest naval base in Norfolk; the Maldives and Marshall Islands; most of Bangladesh including its tiger-inhabited mangrove forests; Miami Beach and South Florida; Venice's nearly thousand-year-old Saint Mark's Basilica; Los Angeles beaches; the White House and various presidential retreats.
By 2100, without halting emissions, 5 percent of the world population will flood annually. Jakarta, home to ten million, could be underwater by 2050. China already evacuates hundreds of thousands from Pearl River Delta flooding each summer. The internet's infrastructure could drown within two decades, while 311,000 American homes face chronic inundation by 2045, growing to 2.4 million properties worth $1 trillion by century's end.
The flooding won't stop at century's end - seas will continue rising for millennia, ultimately claiming 444,000 square miles where 375 million people currently live. Two-thirds of major cities are coastal, and flooding has already quadrupled since 1980. Even with aggressive emissions reduction, global rainfall will increase dramatically, doubling South American flood victims to 12 million, while Africa grows from 24 to 35 million affected, and Asia from 70 to 156 million.
The science grows more alarming by the year. Antarctic ice melt has tripled in just the past decade, from 49 billion tons annually in the 1990s to 219 billion tons by 2017. The Greenland sheet could reach a tipping point at just 1.2 degrees warming - we're already at 1.1 degrees. Together, Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets could ultimately raise seas by 10-20 feet each.

In a four-degree-warmer world, the earth will boil with so many natural disasters we'll just call them "weather" - hurricanes needing new categories, more frequent tornadoes with longer destruction paths, hail rocks quadrupling in size.
The summers of 2017 and 2018 brought unprecedented extremes: three major Atlantic hurricanes in quick succession, Houston's "500,000-year" rainfall, wildfires across California and even Greenland, South Asian floods displacing 45 million. By 2040, 2018 will seem normal.
Climate change doesn't just alter everyday experience but makes once-unthinkable outlier events common. Storms have doubled since 1980; New York City will suffer "500-year" floods every twenty-five years. Intense rainstorms have increased 40 percent in America since mid-century (71 percent in the Northeast). Power outages from storms have doubled just since 2003.
Though 71 percent of our planet is covered in water, only 0.007 percent is freshwater accessible to fuel and feed seven billion people. By 2030, global water demand is projected to exceed supply by 40 percent. Half the world's population depends on seasonal melt from high-elevation snow and ice that's dramatically threatened. Even with Paris targets, Himalayan glaciers will lose 40 percent of their ice by 2100. By 2050, five billion people could have poor access to freshwater.
We tend to view oceans as unfathomable and alien, but they are Earth's predominant environment, covering 70 percent of the planet's surface. Currently, oceans absorb more than a quarter of human carbon emissions and 90 percent of global warming's excess heat. This absorption causes ocean acidification, which could add between a quarter and half a degree of additional warming. By 2030, warming and acidification will threaten 90 percent of all reefs - catastrophic since reefs support a quarter of marine life and provide food and income for half a billion people.

Their average projection: a 23 percent loss in global per capita earnings by century's end compared to a world without warming.
