Leaders like Rob Bell and Brian McLaren express discomfort with certainty about biblical meaning, with McLaren even claiming, "I don't think we've got the gospel right yet," likening orthodoxy to having "truth captured, stuffed, and mounted on the wall."
This perspective particularly appeals to young people who resist precise biblical truth as a corrective to worldly lifestyles. Yet not knowing what you believe-especially regarding the gospel-is by definition unbelief. Scripture teaches that those who perish "did not receive the love of the truth, that they might be saved."
Throughout history, Christians have chosen torture or death rather than deny truth. Unlike terrorists who kill for lies, early Christian martyrs willingly sacrificed themselves for truth. When ordered to sacrifice to idols, Ignatius refused and was thrown to wild beasts. Polycarp, after 86 years of serving Christ, refused to curse Him and was burned alive. In every generation, countless martyrs have died rather than deny truth.
God and truth are inseparable. Every thought about truth leads back to God, which is why Jesus Christ is called "the truth." Those who reject God inevitably reject truth as well. Truth is determined by the very being of God, making atheism inherently untrue. Denying God ultimately forces one to deny all truth, as "the fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge."
Truth exists as an objective reality outside ourselves, fixed and unchanging as God is immutable. The meaning of Scripture isn't determined by personal intuition or experience but has been fixed by God's mind. Though our understanding grows, truth itself remains constant, and God has revealed it with sufficient clarity for all to be held accountable.

The war against truth is nothing new-it began in Eden when the serpent questioned God's word. But today's assault seems unprecedented in its ferocity. Contemporary society is experiencing a profound paradigm shift in how people think about truth, moving from modernity into the postmodern era.
Modernity was characterized by the belief that truth exists and that the scientific method is the only reliable way to determine it. The modern mind treated human reason as the final arbiter of truth, discounting the supernatural while still seeking universal, absolute truths. These presuppositions birthed Darwinism, which spawned atheistic, rationalistic philosophies like Marxism, fascism, and theological liberalism.
After two world wars, social revolutions, and the Cold War, modernity was declared dead. The fall of the Berlin Wall symbolically marked modernity's collapse. The major dogmas from the modern era are now deemed outmoded and discredited in virtually every intellectual corner.
Postmodernism, increasingly used since the 1980s to describe trends in architecture, art, literature, and religion, defies clear definition. It dismisses the possibility of any settled knowledge of truth, suggesting that if objective truth exists, it cannot be known with certainty due to human subjectivity. Strong convictions about truth are judged arrogant and naive, with everyone entitled to their own truth.
Postmodernism has no positive agenda to assert anything as true or good. Its one goal is the systematic deconstruction of every truth claim through relativism, subjectivism, and exaggeration of ambiguity. Its pure essence is the rejection of every expression of certainty, which it regards as inherently arrogant, elitist, and oppressive.
While modernity's demise might seem worth celebrating, postmodernism has resulted in widespread rejection of truth itself. Postmodernists despise truth claims and comprehensive worldviews, which they label "metanarratives." Their preference for subjectivity over objectivity makes postmodernism inherently relativistic-an attempt to eliminate morality and guilt from human life.

The Infiltration of Uncertainty into the Church
The belief that no one can know anything for certain has become virtually the one dogma postmodernists tolerate. Uncertainty is the new truth. Doubt and skepticism have been canonized as humility, while right and wrong are redefined as subjective feelings and personal perspectives. This shift represents a fundamental departure from historical Christian orthodoxy, which has always maintained that absolute truth exists and can be known through divine revelation.
Brian McLaren exemplifies this approach, claiming Christianity is only "a little" true, "but not yet." He deliberately embraces ambiguity and equivocation, suggesting "clarity is sometimes overrated" and warning of "great danger in the quest to be right." In his influential works, McLaren advocates for a "generous orthodoxy" that remains perpetually open-ended and resistant to firm doctrinal positions. Other evangelical leaders like Stanley Grenz and John Franke have followed suit, arguing that theology must constantly change with culture and that epistemological certainty should be abandoned. Their writings promote a "post-foundationalist" theology that views all knowledge as culturally constructed and provisional.
This uncertainty has manifested in various ways across denominations. Some churches now present biblical teachings as "conversation starters" rather than authoritative truth claims. Others have adopted language that emphasizes personal interpretation over objective meaning, replacing phrases like "the Bible teaches" with "I feel" or "in my journey." Traditional doctrines are increasingly framed as historical perspectives rather than eternal truths.
Christians cannot afford apathy about truth. We must guard, proclaim, and pass it on to the next generation. The stakes are particularly high in areas like biblical authority, the exclusivity of Christ, and moral absolutes. While postmodernism does present an opportunity-as people caught in disillusionment seek answers-the worst strategy is to imitate postmodern uncertainty. Instead, we must boldly affirm that God has spoken with clarity and authority through His Son and in Scripture.
Postmodernism is merely worldly unbelief distilled to its essence-rebellion against divine revelation, not virtuous humility. The claim that certainty equals arrogance ironically becomes its own absolute truth claim. Christians are both ambassadors with good news and soldiers commissioned to overthrow false ideas (not people). This requires maintaining conviction while engaging with gentleness and respect. As Martin Luther said, our loyalty is proven where the battle rages, not by steadiness elsewhere while flinching at the point of attack. The church must resist the temptation to soften its commitment to truth in an attempt to appear more palatable to contemporary culture.

Spiritual Warfare: The Nature of the Conflict
The spiritual warfare described in Scripture is not a flesh-and-blood battle fought with physical weapons. Unlike religious terrorism or holy wars, biblical spiritual warfare never authorizes the church to use force to advance God's kingdom. Jesus commanded Peter to put away his sword, establishing that the church has no authority to wield weapons.
While individual Christians may lawfully defend themselves or serve as police or soldiers under government authority, the church as a body must never employ force to advance Christ's kingdom. Our only offensive weapons are "the word of truth and the power of God," and our defensive armor is "the armor of righteousness." This warfare targets ideas and false doctrines, not people or territories. The battlefield is the mind, with the goal being the triumph of truth and souls freed from sin's bondage.
The increasingly popular notion that doctrine matters less than how we live fundamentally violates Jesus' teaching. Christ emphasized that salvation hinges on hearing and believing His Word: "The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life." Scripture consistently teaches that faith, not works, is the instrument of justification.
Biblical orthodoxy actually encompasses orthopraxy-right doctrine and right living are inseparable for true believers. Scripture teaches the primacy of right belief as the foundation of right behavior, with righteous living being the fruit of authentic faith. Pious actions without love for truth constitute mere hypocrisy.
Truth is worth fighting for-it's what the church is called to defend. While not every point of doctrine carries equal importance, the current Truth War centers on fundamental issues: the objectivity and knowability of truth in God's Word, including Scripture's inspiration, authority, inerrancy, sufficiency, and clarity.

Jude's Call to Arms: Contending for the Faith
Jude, Jesus Christ's younger half-brother, wrote his epistle as an urgent call to spiritual battle. Though initially intending to write about "our common salvation," he found it necessary instead to exhort believers to "contend earnestly for the faith." This abrupt change mirrors Paul's approach to the Galatians, foregoing pleasantries to address an immediate threat.
The urgency stemmed from false teachers who had "crept in unnoticed"-spiritual infiltrators turning "the grace of our God into lewdness" and denying Christ's lordship. What began as a warm letter of encouragement transformed into a battle cry, compelling believers to join the Truth War and stand with the Lord against doctrinal corruption.
False teaching has always plagued the church through deceptive spiritual terrorists who function as Satan's missionaries producing apostates. Their goal is leading those exposed to the gospel into damning error before they fully embrace saving faith.
Apostasy is a deliberate rejection of truth after understanding it-not mere ignorance. Apostates often remain in church leadership positions, pretending faithfulness while undermining foundations. Simon Magus exemplifies this pattern-initially believing, being baptized and following Philip, but ultimately revealing his corrupt heart by trying to purchase spiritual power. He later founded one of the first quasi-Christian cults.
Apostasy isn't new-it's been unrelenting since Eden when the serpent first waged war against truth. Throughout Old Testament history, apostasy was pervasive, with faithful remnants often dwindling to tiny numbers. In Elijah's time, only seven thousand remained faithful from Israel's millions. Jeremiah stood virtually alone after forty years of powerful preaching.
Scripture warns apostasy will intensify in the last days, with false prophets deceiving many (Matthew 24:11), scoffers questioning Christ's return (2 Peter 3:3-4), and a great "falling away" (2 Thessalonians 2:3).

The Subtle Infiltration of Error
False teachers aren't easily identified by appearance-they're experts at feigned piety, maintaining carefully polished veneers of charm, innocence and spirituality. While exceptions like Rasputin existed, most false teachers successfully imitate spiritual fruit, disguising themselves as ministers of righteousness.
They rarely attack truth directly, preferring to work underground by suggesting subtle redefinitions or modifications to doctrine, planting doubts like dynamite in foundation holes they've drilled. These are the people Jude warned about who "have crept in unnoticed"-not mere visitors but those who've gained acceptance and respect within the flock, sometimes even as leaders.
Since the church's earliest days, Christians have faced relentless assaults in the Truth War, with the most determined enemies coming from within. Every New Testament writer addresses this issue of false teaching inside the church, and Christ Himself repeatedly commends vigilance and rebukes tolerance of heretics.
The Judaizers mounted one of the earliest, most widespread, and most dangerous onslaughts against the gospel. They insisted Gentiles needed to observe certain Old Testament rituals (especially circumcision) to be truly justified. Though their teaching seemed like a slight difference-merely rearranging the order of belief, justification, and law-keeping-Paul recognized it as a completely different religion: merit versus grace.
John directly confronted gnosticism in his epistles, declaring "Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ?" and refuting Docetism (the gnostic belief that Jesus only appeared human) by affirming that "Every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is of God."
Like a persistent virus, gnosticism constantly mutated and was never fully exterminated. Today, ancient gnostic errors are experiencing a revival through works like The Gospel of Thomas and The Gospel of Judas-well-known fraudulent texts being presented as revelatory discoveries.

History's Warning: How Heresy Takes Hold
One of the first major post-gnostic heresies emerged in Rome under Sabellius in the mid-third century, spreading rapidly throughout Mediterranean churches. Sabellianism (also called modalism) overemphasized God's oneness by denying meaningful distinctions between Trinity members. Sabellius claimed Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were merely different "modes" or manifestations of one divine person who transformed consecutively between these roles.
This view contradicted Scripture's revelation of God's nature, making nonsense of passages like John 1:1 ("the Word was with God") and John 3:16 ("God gave His only begotten Son"). By confusing the distinct persons and work of Father, Son and Spirit, Sabellianism undermined the doctrine of atonement and nearly every major Christian teaching.
Hard on the heels of Sabellianism came an even more significant threat-Arianism, a frontal assault on Christ's deity introduced in the early fourth century. Arius, a bright, articulate presbyter from Alexandria, claimed Father and Son were separate beings with different natures. He denied Christ's deity entirely, declaring "Before the Son was begotten, he was not," teaching Jesus was merely a created being-an archangel, something more than human but less than fully God.
Arianism spread rapidly during a time when Christians had grown complacent about doctrine. Emperor Constantine's conversion and the Edict of Milan (313) had ended persecution, bringing unprecedented peace and prosperity. With the church gaining converts and cultural influence at record rates, few wanted doctrinal conflict.
Though the Council of Nicea ruled decisively against Arius in 325, the controversy was far from settled. Constantine, more concerned with unity than orthodoxy, considered the debate mere theological hairsplitting. Within two years after Nicea, Constantine declared amnesty for Arian leaders, using his political influence against faithful bishops and even exiling Athanasius for refusing to compromise.
At its peak, much of the visible church, including many bishops, fell prey to the heresy. Jerome later recounted that "the whole world awoke with a groan, astonished to find itself Arian." Only Athanasius steadfastly refused to compromise, earning the epitaph "Athanasius contra mundum" (Athanasius against the world) as he was forced into exile five times for his unwavering defense of truth.

The Assault on Christ's Lordship
Contending for the faith has never been easy, but the postmodern shift has made it exceptionally difficult. Today's evangelicals seem obsessed with being trendy and stylish, automatically suspicious of old certainties while desperately staying in step with the world. Many have embraced postmodern virtues of broad-mindedness and diversity while abandoning biblical discernment and fidelity to truth.
For over two decades, evangelicalism has been bombarded with outlandish ideas and programs, with little critical thinking in response. Effective warriors for truth today need biblical discernment, wisdom, fortitude, skill in handling Scripture, and willingness to enter conflict-qualities the contemporary movement has abandoned.
Instead, evangelicals have become obsessed with opinion polls, market research, numerical growth, and public image. They've bought the lie that the Great Commission is a marketing mandate, with church growth specialists urging leaders to "think and speak like the unchurched." The gospel is now treated as a commodity to be sold rather than a divine message to be proclaimed.
Jude's description of apostates culminates in their denial of "the only Lord God and our Lord Jesus Christ." This rejection of Christ's authority forms the root of all apostasy. False teachers resent Christ's lordship and disown Him as Master because their rebellious hearts crave authority for themselves.
The Emerging Church movement challenges Christ's headship by suggesting Scripture lacks sufficient clarity for preaching with certainty or conviction. While not explicitly denying the Bible is God's Word, they achieve the same effect by insisting no one can say for sure what it means.
This "evangelical" postmodernism transforms doubt into virtue, treating strong convictions as arrogance. Some promote a "hermeneutic of humility"-suggesting it's prideful for preachers to claim they know what God said. But this isn't humility; it's arrogant unbelief that refuses to acknowledge God has spoken clearly.
Christ's headship over the church stands at the center of God the Father's eternal purpose. The Father orchestrated the entire plan of redemption to exalt His Son as Lord over all creation and give Him as Head to the church. Everything-election, salvation, Christ's resurrection, glorification, and exaltation-culminates in putting all things under Christ's feet and establishing Him as Head of the church.

Surviving in an Age of Apostasy
The evangelical church today is dangerously susceptible to false teaching, possibly more than any other generation since the Reformation. Biblical ignorance runs deeper and wider than ever before, as evidenced by comparing today's sermons and Christian literature with those from a century ago.
Today's church has been deliberately dumbed-down-sermons are brief, simplistic, laden with pop culture references and anecdotes rather than Scripture. Teaching heavily favors man-centered topics like relationships and self-improvement while neglecting Christ-exalting doctrines.
Unlike Paul, who refused to customize his message to suit cultural tastes and insisted on declaring "the whole counsel of God," today's church-growth experts show little confidence in Scripture's power. They're convinced the gospel needs constant reinvention and contextualization for each generation. Forty years of this approach has left evangelicals untaught, unprepared to defend truth, and unaware of what's at stake.
Remaining faithful amid apostasy requires four spiritual disciplines: First, "building yourselves up on your most holy faith"-studying Scripture and sound doctrine to grow in spiritual maturity. Second, "praying in the Holy Spirit"-maintaining constant communion with God, demonstrating dependence and seeking protection and wisdom. Third, "keep yourselves in the love of God"-living in obedience to Christ's commands, for Jesus said those who keep His commandments abide in His love. Fourth, "looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life"-maintaining eager expectation of Christ's return.
Our duty in the Truth War extends beyond opposing false teachers to rescuing those led astray. Jude describes three types of people affected by apostasy who need different approaches: the confused doubters whose confidence in truth has been shaken; the convinced-those who've bought into false doctrine and are already "in the fire"; and the committed apostates-the most dangerous group requiring extreme caution when approaching.

The Death of Discernment
Discernment is unwelcome in our postmodern culture, which considers pronouncing anything "true" and its opposite "error" as the ultimate taboo. Society now expects people to hold convictions loosely, making certainty about spiritual matters politically incorrect. The entertainment media has promoted this extreme tolerance for decades through talk shows that parade bizarre lifestyles before viewers to broaden minds and raise tolerance levels.
Christians have followed suit, embracing compromise as a tool for church growth and unity. Taking uncompromising doctrinal stances now gets one labeled obstinate or unloving. Many believe Christians should never argue or engage in polemics, despite Scripture being "full of arguments, full of polemics" as Lloyd-Jones noted. In reality, most biblical issues are black and white, not gray.
Another factor contributing to declining discernment is the church's preoccupation with image and influence-the misconception that winning the world requires first winning its favor. This philosophy, driving both seeker-sensitive and Emerging Church movements, suggests making unbelievers comfortable rather than confronting unbelief.
This approach has replaced preaching with entertainment and truth with skepticism. Yet Scripture clearly warns that the world will hate authentic Christians. Jesus himself said, "The world hates Me because I testify of it that its works are evil."
The almost universal failure to follow Jesus' instructions in Matthew 18 regarding sinning church members has severely damaged discernment. Christ taught a clear process: confront privately, then with witnesses, then before the church, and finally treat unrepentant sinners as outsiders.
The church must maintain high standards with clear boundaries between itself and the world. Open sin cannot be tolerated. When the church stops dealing seriously with sin, the world mingles with the church and distinction disappears.
The deteriorating spiritual maturity in today's church has devastated discernment. As knowledge of God's truth ebbs, people chase feelings, experiences, miracles, and quick solutions to life's problems. Contemporary Christianity may be shallower than at any other time in history.
Surveys reveal alarming biblical illiteracy even among self-described "born-again" Christians. This spiritual shallowness results directly from shallow teaching, as churches offer only the barest basics-or less.
Spiritual growth happens through absorbing God's Word. Hebrews 5:12-6:1 makes clear that discernment and maturity go hand in hand: "Solid food is for the mature, who because of practice have their senses trained to discern good and evil." Discernment results from a carefully disciplined mind nourished by Scripture, not from feelings or mystical gifts.
The church can regain discernment only by confronting relativism and diligently applying ourselves to God's Word. Truth is not individual opinion or imagination-truth is what God decrees. He has given us an infallible source in His revealed Word, which all Christians are commanded to proclaim, study, and teach worldwide.
