His self-deprecating honesty about his own flaws made him more relatable as a spiritual teacher. In 1991, he created "Reaching Out," a program combining volunteerism with inner work, embodying his philosophy that true service blurs the line between helper and helped. Timothy Leary faced death as he lived life-as a showman and rebel. To secure his release from prison in the 1970s, Leary became a government informant, betraying friends who helped him escape. He worked with the FBI, gathering evidence against associates and even trying to convince his ex-wife to join him as an informant. Former friends publicly denounced him, with Leary's own son Jack condemning his father as a pathological liar. After his 1976 release, most friends eventually forgave his betrayals. In his final days, surrounded by devotees, Leary remained a contradictory figure-sometimes radiating clarity and presence, other times appearing as a "twisted, angry, fucked-up old man." As Robert Forte observed while caring for the dying Leary: "You get the Timothy Leary you deserve." Leary's ashes were eventually launched into space aboard a Pegasus rocket. At nearly ninety, Huston Smith hobbled with a walker into a San Diego celebration marking the fiftieth anniversary of his landmark book. Despite physical frailties, his spirit remained luminous. Smith's spiritual depth was tested through profound losses-his daughter Karen to cancer and granddaughter Serena's mysterious disappearance at sea. Yet these tragedies only deepened his faith. Smith came to believe people turn to religion as naturally as "sunflowers bend toward light" or "birds' wings point to the reality of air." His vision of death was peaceful-eventually turning from enjoying the sunset to enjoying the uncompromised sunset itself. "The string will have been cut," he said. "The bird will be free."
