The Eastern religious landscape is not marked out in churches or moral domains as in the West, but exists in a more subtle, relative, secretive state of mind. The unchanging East reveals what Europe might have become without Christianity. In Asia, men remain entangled in their own mythology, drowned in their own metaphysics. Some have grown weary of wild fictions, others of wonderful truths, and a few diabolists have such hatred of heaven and earth they've sought refuge in hell. This is precisely the fall that our fathers felt at the first moment of Roman decline. Had the Church not entered the world, Europe would likely resemble Asia now. The unchanging East remains so precisely because it never experienced the great change. Late paganism showed signs of becoming equally changeless-not that new schools wouldn't arise, or that there couldn't be mystics, social codes, or good men. In Christendom, hope has never been absent-sometimes errant or extravagant, but always evidencing people in better spirits. The debates about liberalizing theology will continue until people recognize that the dogmatic part is actually the most liberal part. If dogma seems incredible, it's because it's incredibly liberal. The Catholic who believes prayers make a difference lives like a free citizen in a constitutional commonwealth, while the monist lives like a slave under a sultan. We accept Christianity because it fits the lock, because it's like life. It doesn't imprison us in dreams of destiny or universal delusion but opens incredible heavens and makes earth credible. We are Christians not because we worship a key, but because we have passed a door and felt liberty blow over the land of the living.
