But among the crowds were two elderly believers-Simeon and Anna-who, unlike their peers and the cynics, held onto faith in the Scriptures' promise of a coming Messiah. While most missed the signs and prophecies, they waited and believed, studying Scripture and listening to God's Spirit. Luke tells us almost nothing about Simeon's background-no family details, hometown, or occupation. Only one thing mattered: he was "righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel." Unlike those around him, Simeon still believed God would save His people. Imagine this elderly man coming daily to the temple, perhaps mocked by religious leaders, scanning the crowd and asking, "Is this baby the one?" until finally the Spirit whispers, "This is the day." When Simeon holds the infant Jesus, he prays words he'd prepared his entire life: "Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace...for my eyes have seen your salvation." Simeon could face death because he had met the One who would conquer it. Like Simeon, Anna appears as a steadfast witness to God's promise. As a prophetess from the tribe of Asher, her ministry wasn't predicting the future but declaring God's words of promise daily in the temple. Her life exemplifies steadfast courage-a widow who spent decades fasting and praying, clinging to distant promises when others had given up. Anna represents the upside-down nature of God's kingdom, where God works not through celebrities and the powerful, but through the ordinary, the outcasts, the forgotten. While our culture celebrates influence and platform, God advances His purposes through simple, faithful servants like Anna, who kept her eyes fixed on God day and night, waiting for His visitation. Her presence at Jesus' presentation reminds us that God reveals Himself to those who faithfully seek Him, regardless of status or prominence.

The Surprising Family Tree: Grace for the Broken

Jesus' family tree is filled with misfits and sinners-David the adulterer and murderer, Abraham the liar, Judah who sold his brother and slept with his daughter-in-law. These aren't ancestors you'd proudly display on your refrigerator; they're more like infamous relatives you'd keep hidden. Yet this reveals a profound truth about God's kingdom-it's a place where sinners find refuge, where the last become first. As Jesus himself said, "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners." This is good news for us all, as we know there are parts of our lives we'd rather keep hidden. To close this Christmas journey, consider four remarkable women in Jesus' genealogy-unusual since Jewish genealogies typically omitted women entirely. Their inclusion speaks volumes about Jesus' upside-down kingdom, especially considering women in the first century had virtually no legal rights or voice. Tamar's story was one most Jewish people wanted to forget. Widowed when God struck down her husband Er for wickedness, custom dictated she marry his brother Onan. But Onan refused to conceive a child with her, leading to his death as well. When Judah failed to provide his youngest son as promised, Tamar disguised herself as a prostitute, conceived with Judah himself, and bore Perez-an ancestor of both David and Jesus. Rahab was a prostitute in Jericho who hid Israelite spies, having heard of God's miracles and turning to faith in Yahweh. Though we recoil at her profession, in ancient times this was often the only survival option for vulnerable women without family protection. For helping Israel, she was grafted into the Jewish nation. Bathsheba's story is often viewed through David's perspective-his sin, repentance, and restoration. But consider Bathsheba herself: summoned by the king, she likely had little choice but to comply. As the granddaughter of David's advisor Ahithophel, her exploitation by David was particularly heinous. His actions led to her husband's death, her child's death, and a devastating civil war. Ruth stands as the most scandalous name in Jesus' genealogy, not for moral failings but for her identity as a Moabite-one of Israel's sworn enemies. Moabites weren't merely Gentiles but were forbidden from entering Israel's worship gatherings. Yet when famine drove Naomi's family to Moab, Ruth chose to follow her widowed mother-in-law back to Israel, embracing Naomi's God. Through her marriage to Boaz, her kinsman-redeemer, Ruth became David's great-grandmother. The inclusion of these forgotten, exploited, and outsider women in Jesus' genealogy offers profound comfort. God names those the world forgets-the exploited, the forgotten, the powerless. And through Christ, we too can receive a new name and identity. If God's family has room for Rahab and Tamar, Abraham and Jacob, Ruth and Bathsheba, David and Judah, then surely there's room for us. This is Christmas's true meaning: God transforms sinners into new creations with fresh identities and purpose. In Christ, the old passes away and everything becomes new, as we're reconciled to God and given the ministry of reconciliation.
