After forty-four years, the friendly foxes had transformed dramatically. They weren't just behaviorally different-they showed physical changes seen across domesticated species: smaller bodies, shorter snouts, floppy ears, curly tails, and colorful coats. When I tested these foxes myself, I found they could follow human pointing gestures to find hidden toys, while regular foxes chose randomly. Even more remarkably, friendly fox kits who had never met humans followed pointing gestures successfully, while socialized regular foxes performed barely above chance.
This confirmed that breeding for friendliness accidentally enhanced cooperative communication abilities. Without fear, foxes could apply their social skills more flexibly in relationships with humans. Dogs' unique abilities evolved through domestication, not from their wolf ancestors.

Following Belgian colonization that exacerbated tribal divisions, Rachel survived the Congo Wars only to experience the 2004 Gatumba Massacre, where rebels murdered her husband and daughters before subjecting her to prolonged captivity and rape.
Her story introduces the dark side of self-domestication-how the same mechanisms that enable our extraordinary cooperation can also facilitate extreme cruelty. One fundamental principle of social psychology is that people prefer their own group members. We become xenophobic toward strangers from rival groups, and it takes very little to trigger this psychology. Even arbitrary differences like armbands or eye color can create antagonism between groups.
The human self-domestication hypothesis suggests our worst behaviors toward other groups aren't merely "negative feelings" but involve dampening our theory of mind network. This blindness to outsiders' humanity prevents empathy for their suffering, making aggression permissible and suspending moral rules for their treatment.
Reduced activity in our brain's theory of mind network directly links to negative treatment of outsiders. The amygdala responds to threats and influences our theory of mind network, with oxytocin modulating this relationship. When shown photographs of people perceived as low in both competence and warmth (like homeless people), brain scans reveal increased amygdala activity, suggesting threat perception and reduced attribution of full humanity.
Oxytocin dramatically affects our treatment of outsiders. Dutch men given oxytocin were three times more likely to donate to their group members and more likely to punish outsiders. In a moral dilemma involving sacrificing one person to save many, oxytocin made participants 25% less likely to sacrifice someone with a Dutch name versus an Arab name.
This pattern appears in all studied hunter-gatherer groups and throughout history, from ancient massacres to modern genocides. Social psychologist Nour Kteily's research using the "Ascent of Man Scale" found Americans rated certain ethnic groups as less than fully human, with Muslims scoring 10 points below "fully human." Groups who perceive themselves as dehumanized will dehumanize in return. Studies show both Black and white people demonstrate stronger empathy responses to pain inflicted on members of their own race. This reciprocal dehumanization creates dangerous cycles that can rapidly escalate in today's social media environment.

Building Societies That Nurture Our Better Nature
We evolved as egalitarian hunter-gatherers who valued social currency and prevented power monopolization. But with agriculture came the seeds of despotism-as we produced and stored food, societies grew larger, and mechanisms that kept despotism in check began to fail.
The Industrial Revolution brought a breakthrough with constitutional democracies. Beginning with England's 1689 Bill of Rights, these systems limited rulers' power and built in checks for power-sharing and compromise. Democratic countries rarely go to war with each other and better protect human rights, freedoms, education, and healthcare.
America's founders understood humanity's tendency toward group identity and dehumanization. James Madison observed that "mankind" has such strong propensity to "fall into mutual animosities" that even "frivolous and fanciful distinctions" can spark violent conflicts.
To prevent this "tyranny of the majority," they established a strong central government promoting national identity rather than state self-governance. The Constitution established the Electoral College to prevent populous states from imposing their will on rural ones, and created checks and balances through veto power, separation of powers, and a bicameral legislature.
Today, this experiment faces criticism from all sides. Most alarming is young people's disenchantment-only a third consider democracy essential, a quarter believe it's a "bad" way to run the country, and another third would prefer a strong leader who doesn't need elections.
Dehumanization isn't limited to one country, economy, culture, or political orientation. The human self-domestication hypothesis suggests the ability to dehumanize "others" is universal and can appear across the entire political spectrum, with those at the extremes most likely to dehumanize their opponents.
Most people in democracies occupy the "moderate middle"-they may lean one way or another but remain responsive to facts and capable of compromise. Outside this moderate middle are ideologues who believe their political views are absolutely right while others are wrong. At the furthest extremes are those who favor oligarchy with their group in power, those who trust autocratic leaders defending their threatened values, and their left-wing counterparts advocating extreme egalitarianism or rejecting all authority.
Research confirms dehumanization occurs across the political spectrum. Every demographic contains people who dehumanize others, regardless of political affiliation, age, gender, or location. The underlying psychology remains consistent: extremists convince their group they're being dehumanized, increasing perceived threat levels until even moderates become primed for violence.
The most effective antidote to dehumanization is contact. During World War II, Andrzej Pitynski exemplified extraordinary moral courage by hiding Jews in his Polish apartment. When sociologists analyzed testimonials from hundreds of Holocaust rescuers, they found just one common denominator: all had close pre-war relationships with Jewish neighbors, friends, or coworkers.
Schools, universities, and military service provide ideal settings for sustained friendly contact. White children who attended integrated schools in the 1960s grew up more likely to support interracial marriage and have black friends. Even imagining positive contact with stigmatized groups increases empathy. Most significantly, contact has the greatest impact on the most intolerant people, creating "reciprocal humanization" that counteracts the "reciprocal dehumanization" that occurs under threat.
Political scientist Erica Chenoweth's research confirmed that peaceful resistance campaigns are twice as likely to succeed as violent ones. While extreme tactics gain media attention, they decrease popular support and increase threat perception. Peaceful demonstrations reduce perceived threat and often lead security forces to defect rather than attack protesters.
Self-domestication enabled humans to live in increasingly larger groups, evolving from Neanderthal bands of dozens to settlements of hundreds, thousands, and eventually millions. Cities at their best create vibrant communities mixing diverse populations, facilitating contact that promotes tolerance and drives innovation. Effective urban design includes mid-rise buildings where residents maintain visual connection with street life, mixed-income housing, pedestrian-friendly sidewalks, and communal spaces like gardens and playgrounds.
For humans to thrive, we need spaces that facilitate interaction between diverse groups-parks, cafes, theaters-where we can meet neighbors and exchange ideas, just as our ancestors did at trade route settlements. To maintain healthy democracy and express the best of human nature, we must design spaces where we can meet without fear, disagree respectfully, and befriend those least like ourselves.
