Heisenberg's uncertainty principle states that if you measure an object's x-component of momentum with uncertainty p, you cannot simultaneously know its x-position more accurately than x >= /2p. This principle manifests in our two-slit experiment when we modify it to have a movable plate containing the holes. By watching the plate's recoil, we might determine which hole an electron passes through. But the very momentum transfer needed to make this determination disturbs the electron's path enough to destroy the interference pattern.
The fundamental principles of quantum mechanics can be summarized in three key points: (1) The probability of an event is given by the square of the absolute value of a complex number called the probability amplitude: P = ||2.
