People fear public humiliation more than public speaking itself. The voice in your head saying "You're screwing up" or "Everyone thinks you're boring" comes from your internal Department of Homeland Insecurity. This voice-personified as "Roy" by Schwartzberg-is a malicious liar whose job is to make you feel insecure.
To overcome speaking anxiety: 1) Know your point (anyone without one should be nervous); 2) Focus on delivering your point, not on yourself; and 3) Practice out loud to train your mouth and brain to collaborate. Only audience feedback confirms if you've successfully delivered your point.
In settings where others pressure you to address their points-whether as a conference panelist, TV guest, or with an opinionated dinner guest-remember that defending yourself against others' points takes time away from conveying your own. Use transitional "bridges" like "I hear what you're saying, but my point is..." to stay focused on your message.
When preparing speeches, avoid reading from scripts-this forces you to look down, losing crucial eye contact with your audience. Listeners remember points, not words, and reading can seem inauthentic. Instead, use smart notes that only remind you of key points and details you might forget, like statistics or names.
