This widespread contempt leads to public calls for blood, shackles, and show trials when economic problems arise. Why? Because we view businessmen as inherently corrupt-driven by greed and the selfish pursuit of profit.
Meanwhile, today's entitlement state redistributes wealth through a vast array of programs that now consume over 60 percent of the federal budget. The average American household pays $16,000 annually toward these programs-double what we paid a decade ago. Since LBJ's war on poverty began, more than $14.3 trillion has been spent on means-tested welfare programs alone.
This expansion stems from our moral conviction that sacrifice for others' needs is our duty. As George W. Bush put it, "When somebody hurts, government has got to move." This transforms need into political entitlement-if you need something someone else produced, you have a right to it.

His demanding nature, while often criticized, drove innovations that transformed multiple industries.
Our conventional understanding of selfishness presents a false dichotomy: either sacrifice yourself for others like Mother Teresa or sacrifice others for yourself like Bernie Madoff. This "package deal" thinking fails to properly classify productive traders like Jobs, Elon Musk, or Jeff Bezos who neither sacrifice themselves nor others. Business in a free market involves individuals creating wealth to benefit themselves, but to gain customers, they must create valuable products and services that benefit others. This mutual benefit distinguishes true productive selfishness from destructive exploitation.
Profits in legitimate business come not from exploitation but from value creation - producing something more valuable than what was used to create it. Apple's profits came from creating devices that millions of people voluntarily chose to buy because they valued them more than the money they paid. It's logically absurd to equate productive businesspeople with self-destructive criminals simply because both pursue financial gain, just as it would be to equate George Washington and Adolf Hitler because both pursued military victory in war.
Philosopher Ayn Rand fundamentally reconceptualized selfishness by asking what genuinely promotes one's long-term rational interests, concluding that only a life of productive achievement is truly selfish. Genuine selfishness consists of the rational, principled pursuit of objective well-being, neither sacrificing yourself to others nor sacrificing others to yourself. It requires thinking long-range, building sustainable relationships, and creating actual value. Most people assume morality means self-sacrifice-that you can be self-interested or moral, but not both. This wasn't always the case. 2. Productiveness: "Production is the application of reason to the problem of survival." 3. Trade: Trade is the model of all proper human relationships-win/win exchanges where both parties benefit. The rationally selfish person thinks in win/win terms because making or accepting losses isn't in his interest.
Self-sacrifice means giving up something you value for something you value less or don't value at all. From Rand's perspective, this is obscene-a person of self-esteem doesn't regard others' lives as more important than his own or surrender his highest values. Self-sacrifice has been the justification for every dictatorship in history. As Rand wrote in The Fountainhead, "where there's sacrifice, there's someone collecting sacrificial offerings."

As the "Master-agent" who sets enterprises in motion, entrepreneurs like Zappos' Tony Hsieh demonstrate extraordinary vision and persistence, often risking everything on their ventures.
Business isn't feudalism with exploited serfs and tyrannical lords-it's a fellowship of traders where people cooperate voluntarily for mutual advantage. Most employees choose their jobs freely and even look forward to work. The "pyramid-of-ability principle" shows how the most intellectually able producers raise everyone's standard of living through their ideas and innovations.
Profit, in its broadest sense, means making oneself better off. In economic terms, it's the money left after paying expenses-the mark of having produced something others value more than the inputs used to create it. Many mistakenly see profits as unnecessary markups, but profits are created through productive effort, not extracted from consumers.
Successful businesses consistently operate on principles that reflect rational selfishness. John Allison's BB&T thrived through values including reality, reason, independent thinking, productivity, honesty, integrity, justice, pride, self-esteem, and teamwork-essentially specifications of rationality, productiveness, and trade.
Critics attack profit-seeking as cold and harmful to the "public good," demanding businesses be "socially responsible" instead. Control Data exemplifies this approach's dangers-once IBM's competitor, it self-sacrificially built factories in poor neighborhoods, launched unprofitable agricultural projects, and even leased cars to convicted felons who often stole them. This "social responsibility" focus ultimately destroyed the company by diverting resources from its core business.
The profit motive is the selfish desire to earn material gain through production. True profit seekers don't resort to chicanery but follow principles to make money through trade. As Hank Rearden declares in Atlas Shrugged, "I work for nothing but my own profit... I do not sacrifice my interests to them nor do they sacrifice theirs to me; we deal as equals by mutual consent to mutual advantage."

Individual liberty guarantees your right to think and act on your judgment. The right to private property ensures that whatever you produce is yours to keep, use, or dispose of as you see fit. The principle of voluntary association means individuals deal with each other only through voluntary trade for mutual benefit.
The only way someone can violate your rights is through physical coercion. Force uniquely negates your mind by preventing you from acting on your judgment. The only proper role of government is protecting individuals from the initiation of force. As Jefferson said, good government "restrains men from injuring one another" while leaving them otherwise free.
Capitalism institutionalizes freedom to protect a life of reason, productiveness, and trade. Its fundamental principle is the complete separation of State and Economics-liberating economic activities from all government intervention, coercion, regulation or control. This separation must be total-no welfare schemes, no corporate subsidies, no regulations, no economic planning.
Honeywell CEO David Cote once challenged the villain image of businessmen, declaring "We're the good guys" and noting that America's standard of living and global position are "all driven by U.S. business." When asked how markets are moral, he faltered, finally saying "markets are markets...I can't say that's moral or immoral, it's just kind of the way it works." This view must change to stop government growth. Americans need to understand the free market as profoundly moral-not just tolerable or "least bad," but an ideal economic system that rewards rational selfishness.
