Sam Harris is an American philosopher, neuroscientist, author, and podcast host known for his critical examination of religion, ethics, and the nature of consciousness. 전기 및 작가의 여정

Sam Harris, born in Los Angeles in 1967 to actor Berkeley Harris and television writer-producer Susan Harris, grew up in a secular household after his parents divorced when he was two. Though neither parent emphasized religion, Harris’s adolescence was marked by philosophical curiosity, which was catalyzed by a formative experience with the psychoactive drug MDMA while attending Stanford University. This event inspired him to explore the possibility of spiritual insight without recourse to drugs, leading him to leave Stanford and spend over a decade traveling and studying meditation in India and Nepal, deepening his exposure to Buddhist and Hindu traditions.

quote
We have a choice. We have two options as human beings. We have a choice between conversation and war. That's it. Conversation and violence. And faith is a conversation stopper
-Letter to a Christian Nation
quote
In fact, 'atheism' is a term that should not even exist. No one ever needs to identify himself as a 'non-astrologer' or a 'non-alchemist.' We do not have words for people who doubt that Elvis is still alive or that aliens have traversed the galaxy only to molest ranchers and their cattle. Atheism is nothing more than the noises reasonable people make in the presence of unjustified religious beliefs
-Letter to a Christian Nation
quote
You can do what you decide to do — but you cannot decide what you will decide to do
-Free Will
quote
If I could wave a magic wand and get rid of either rape or religion, I would not hesitate to get rid of religion. I think more people are dying as a result of our religious myths than as a result of any other ideology
-The Temple Of Reason
quote
I know of no society in human history that ever suffered because its people became too desirous of evidence in support of their core beliefs
-Letter to a Christian Nation
quote
It is rather more noble to help people purely out of concern for their suffering than it is to help them because you think the Creator of the Universe wants you to do it, or will reward you for doing it, or will punish you for not doing it
-Beyond Belief conference
quote
I can think of no political right more fundamental than the right to peacefully steward the contents of one’s own consciousness
-Drugs and the Meaning of Life
quote
Atheism is just a way of clearing the space for better conversations
-Death and the Present Moment
quote
You don't get anything worth getting by pretending to know things you don't know
-The End of Liberalism?
quote
We live in a world in which the boundaries between nations mean less and less, and they will one day mean nothing
-TED Talk: Science Can Answer Moral Questions
