Andrew S. Grove, widely known as Andy Grove, was born András István Gróf in Budapest in 1936 and came of age under extraordinary pressure. He survived the Nazi occupation as a child, then fled Hungary after the 1956 uprising and arrived in the United States as a refugee with limited English and little money. Those early dislocations shaped both his ambition and his distrust of complacency. He studied chemical engineering at the City College of New York, graduating in 1960, and later earned a Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley.
