Amy Goodman is an American broadcast journalist, investigative reporter, and author best known as the co-founder and longtime host of Democracy Now! Her work centers on politics, war, human rights, and social justice. She has written books including The Silenced Majority and received honors such as the Right Livelihood Award.
Amy Goodman was born in Bay Shore, New York, in 1957 and grew up on Long Island in a family shaped by civic engagement and Jewish social-justice traditions. At Harvard, where she completed a degree in anthropology in 1984 after a detour through the College of the Atlantic, she moved between activism, student journalism, and an early interest in public health. She helped found a feminist campus newspaper, later turned her thesis on Depo-Provera into magazine reporting, and discovered in radio a form that could carry voices with a vividness print could not. That discovery led her to Pacifica station WBAI, where she began in 1985 and spent a decade building the habits of independent reporting.
