John Maeda

John Maeda is an American designer, technologist, and educator known for bridging design, computation, and business. He wrote The Laws of Simplicity and How to Speak Machine, and previously led the Rhode Island School of Design. His work has shaped how technology companies apply design thinking and computational creativity.

経歴と著者の歩み

John Maeda’s career has unfolded as a sustained effort to close the distance between technical logic and artistic intuition. Raised in Seattle in a family whose work was tied to a tofu business, he has often returned to an early memory: a teacher praised him for being good at both math and art, but only the math was repeated back at home. That tension became a lifelong theme. He studied electrical engineering and computer science at MIT, later earning a PhD in design from the University of Tsukuba in Japan and an MBA from Arizona State University. At the MIT Media Lab, where he led the Aesthetics and Computation group, he became one of the early figures to argue that code could be a native artistic material, not just a tool behind the scenes. His book Design by Numbers helped make programming more approachable for artists and designers. ((https://blog.ted.com/looking-at-the-intersections-john-maeda-at-tedglobal-2012/?utm_source=openai))
